How Do I Change My Name and Update It on Certificates? Need Step-by-Step Guidance

Please tell me what the procedure is to change a name. Once the name is changed, can we also update our name on the certificate? Is it necessary or not required?

I would like to suggest the following:

Insert an advertisement in at least two national dailies about the change of name, stating:

TO WHOMSOEVER IT MAY CONCERN

LET IT BE KNOWN TO ALL THAT I, SMRIN, HAVE NOW CHANGED MY NAME TO __________ AND HENCEFORTH, FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES, MY NAME WILL BE ____________. ONLY MY OTHER DETAILS REMAIN THE SAME.

Thereafter, along with this advertisement, go to the first-class magistrate with an affidavit duly notarized/attested by the Oath Commissioner and get this affidavit attested by the First-Class Magistrate.

For all practical purposes, this is sufficient, and wherever you want the change to be effected, you have to produce the attested copy of the affidavit by the First-Class Magistrate.

After obtaining this document, you need to publish a paper advertisement in a local and national newspaper. Following these steps, you can apply for your PAN card, driving license, passport, and certificates. The total cost for this process will be a maximum of Rs. 1500.00.

Insofar as the legal aspect goes, there is no impediment because once you fulfill the requirements for a change of name, nothing more needs to be done. For more practical reasons, if you want to have your name changed on certificates, you will need to apply for duplicates with a request that, due to the change of name, the new certificates reflect the updated information.
