Interview Challenges for Graduates: What Surprised Me During University Visits?

As an HR professional with 20 years of experience, I wanted to share with you the presentation I use when visiting universities to brief students on what employers are looking for during interviews. Some things in the presentation seem so obvious, but I was surprised at how poorly some graduates did at interviews, for example, not finding out about the company, turning up late, being inappropriately dressed, etc.

If students follow these pointers, they are bound to do well in the interviews. It is just unfortunate that most perceive interviews as a place and a point in time when a magical transformation will take place.

Sorry, I saw your email late in the day. It may be worth opening my presentation - there are some suggested topic areas in there. Alternatively, why not google 'difficult interview questions' and you will be flooded with information.

I think they are more highlighted nowadays. One more thing, how to deal with such questions and what should be the accurate reply a candidate should give. But thank you for making me more aware. Hi Mr. Ranjit,

I agree with your presentation and would like to add a few points based on my own observation of students and applicants. Some of the gaps I have observed include a low level of general awareness, a lack of awareness of the industry they represent, a lack of awareness about the organization they are applying to, and in the case of young applicants, their inability to connect or convert the content of their books into practical knowledge. Additionally, there is a lack of interest in learning a job in depth. The applicants seem to be mainly interested in designation, promotion, and compensation.
