Feeling Stuck in HR: How Can I Move Beyond a Tele-Calling Role and Advance My Career?

I have completed my MBA in HR & Marketing. I want to develop my career in HR, but I made a big mistake during my MBA. My major project was in Marketing. After completing my degree, when I applied for HR jobs in various companies, I faced the same question repeatedly: "If you aim to start a career in HR, why did you choose to do your project in marketing?" Unfortunately, I couldn't provide a satisfactory answer.

My intention was to take separate HR courses, which is why I chose to focus on Marketing for my project, but this explanation was not well-received. I am at a loss on how to rectify this situation. Eventually, I secured a job as an HR Recruiter in a small consultancy, where I have been working for over a year now.

However, I am feeling quite unsettled. I am concerned about the trajectory of my career. Over the past year, my experience has been limited to the pre-recruitment process, which, to be honest, resembles more of a tele-calling profile.

Could you please advise me on how to advance my career? Would pursuing additional courses be beneficial for me? What courses should I consider undertaking?

It is quite common to select the wrong stream. You can develop your knowledge in Core HR by studying the materials. Even in Cite HR, you will find lots of information on HR. There is no need to do any certification course. During interviews, explain why you chose the Major project in Marketing and try to convince them that you have potential in HR activities and express your skills in Core HR. They will surely agree with you.

Learn all the HR activities as much as possible to be prepared to face any kind of HR interview.

I had faced a similar kind of situation at the start of my career. I had completed my major project in marketing, but I was interested in joining HR during my placement. I had to take extra initiatives by learning new things about core HR and going through various books on Human Resources.

Soon after, I landed a position in the core HR department of a 5-star hotel company. Now, I am working as a Manager - HR Business Partner in a German-based Investment Bank in Bangalore.

So, I would suggest you focus on learning more about core HR activities rather than dwelling on your past mistakes, which I believe will not hinder your career progress at all.

Don't be upset. There's nothing wrong with expanding your thinking and style. The characteristics of a good leader today include innovation, creativity, vision, and a supreme interest in all things that surround them.

If your project was in Marketing, so be it. The key is that you finished your studies and passed with flying colors. Be proud of who you are. There's nothing wrong with approaching your goals and dreams from a different direction than others.

My advice would be to concentrate on the core HR subjects. When you face an interview, try to convey to the interviewer that you possess equivalent or even more skills required for an HR role. I totally agree that there is no better option than to gather knowledge from books and make a nice resume highlighting your knowledge of core HR activities.

Additional Qualifications for HR Career Advancement

I disagree with people who say that no additional qualification is required. As an HR Manager, would you appoint a person with different skills than the job he applies for? I am sure your answer is no. If you are keen on pursuing an HR job, you must attend additional training/workshops.
