Hi,
This happened around 1 year back. My friend interviewed a candidate for a driver vacancy who said he is from one of the reputed companies. She asked for a reference in the same company. He said he was driving a car for the MD's wife, and my friend could contact their home number or the mobile number of the MD's wife. He gave her both numbers.
She was trying to reach this home number but could not get through. Hence, she dialed the mobile number and spoke to a person who claimed to be the brother of the MD's wife and gave very good feedback. Meanwhile, she also checked the telephone directory for the landline number, and this number was registered with the same company. She called that company to inquire about his salary details, and they informed her that the MD personally pays the salary for the MD's wife's driver.
After several days, she learned through other drivers that he was working for a travel agency and not with the company or the MD's residence. She strongly refused to believe this. Finally, she decided to put a stop to this and tried contacting the MD's residence again. His wife picked up the call and said that no one by that name had worked as a driver for her.
What actually happened was that one of his friends is working as a watchman/driver in the MD's or neighbor's house. He came to know that for the next 20 days, they were not going to be in India as they had gone on a trip to the US.
They took advantage of this information and used their landline number. The person "X" claimed to be the MD's brother-in-law and helped this boy to get the job. She could not reach the mobile number.
Now, the sad part is that my friend's boss is telling her that she did not conduct a proper reference check.
Please be careful while doing reference checks.
