Hi Jeevan,

Tell me, what information do you need in the apparel industry? I am working for a major brand called ESPRIT as the business head.

Dear Antony/Nidhi/Srinaren and Madhusuden,

Thank you for the message. I have just joined an apparel unit which is run by a group that is 50 plus years old. This particular unit is in its 2nd year of existence. We have a staff strength of about 80 people, including workers and trainees totaling around 500.

One of the main issues we face is the high turnover rate. Being in Coimbatore, we have a lot of competition. Except for those in apprentice schemes, employees tend to leave within 6-12 months of joining. They have mostly been recruited from places like Chennai/Bangalore with a 30-40% increase in CTC and leave with a minimum hike of 30%.

Next, I would like to gather some details about the HR and motivation practices that are followed in the industry, as our management is very interested in the well-being of our employees.

Once again, thank you for the responses. Have a rewarding day ahead!

Hi Jeevan,

Turnover has always been a major problem in the textile industry, and the only way to make workers stay is the Human Relation approach. Believe me, I have seen wonders in this regard, only because of the fact that we had really good personal relations with all workers, and such loving and caring behavior that even if they got good hikes, they would never go, or go and come back.

You need to identify their needs (personal as well) and ensure that every query is solved. Personnel Executives play a big role in it. Right from the timekeeper to the Personnel head, everyone has to be affectionate towards them.

Please be detailed about the prevailing atmosphere in your company, and I will be able to guide you further.

Regards,
Nidhi

Hi Nidhi,

I fully agree with you. Human relationships can help reduce employee turnover. Can you share some incidents from your organization where this has made a difference?

Dear Nidhi,

I have personally known from my previous organizations that you can only work successfully with good relations. The problem we are facing here is that production people are so much worried about the targets that they don't care for humane values, and they end up treating the shop floor employees with disrespect.

I will get back to you soon with more details. Thanks for replying.

Jeevan

Dear Friend,

There is nothing special about the garment industry. In fact, it will be more stringent in the garment industry as buyers will be insisting on social compliance auditing.
