Feeling Stuck in My HR Role: Is This Marketing Work Helping My Career?

Hello seniors,

I am a fresher in MBA (HR) and have recently joined an HR company. I'm not into recruitment, but my work profile is that I have to visit clients/companies and give presentations of our HR firm's organization's profile, so that they tie up with us. So I'm not sure if this profile is going to help my career in HR. Please help, and this is a recession period so hardly any vacancies (especially for freshers) arise. What should I do? I'm in the probation period.

Please help me.

Seems like you have joined a Manpower consultancy (correct me if I am wrong). If that is the case, then what you are doing right now is a Business Development job. In a lot of consultancies, this model works where the person has to get the client by doing BD, and once the positions start coming, then start working on the positions and try to close them. At the same time, you also have a lot of consultancies where Business Development people are different from Recruiting people, and both the teams work individually (this one looks like your case).

I am not sure what the job role that has been explained to you before you were hired. So I won't be able to suggest anything. But for your second question, "NO," this job you are doing will not help you in your career in HR, and I agree that in a time like this, HR jobs are not too much in the market. So you can do 2 things:-

a) Keep doing this job and parallelly keep looking for an HR job in a "COMPANY."

b) Ask your current company to transfer you to a recruiting job. If they don't agree, quit this consultancy and try to get into another consultancy where you can get a recruiting role because that will be better off than a Business Development role. (And I know consultancies are still hiring people).

Good that you have a job in hand. The market is improving, and you are continuing the search for an HR profile. I cannot comment on the role and learning until I know the profile or your organization.

As Prashant rightly said, it's a marketing and sales profile.

Meanwhile, keep learning whatever you are doing. Try to understand the HR aspects in your current job, like learning to build interpersonal relationships/understanding, understand the business and how HR can be helpful, where marketing and HR have interfaces. Believe me, this will give you a more in-depth understanding. Also, whatever you are doing, keep proving yourself to the management so that even if you do not get another job, though you will, they can listen to you and probably shift you into core HR. If you are a good performer, you can ask for the shift, but it's not that easy.

If you work for a very long time in this role without HR-related understanding, it will affect the HR aspect. Also, check how much you like this job.

Instead of worrying, I suggest you develop your understanding and keep searching for the job. There is no fixed solution to this from my point of view.

Also, whichever HR job you get, take it.

I m not into recruitment but my work profile is that i hav to visit clients/companies and give presentations of our (HR firm) organisation' s profile, so that dey tie up wid us.So m not sure -is this profile is going to help my career in HR?This is more in line with Business Development and coming to your point whether this would help you in your career in HR-Considering the current scenario – am of the opinion this would definetly help your career in many ways and two things comes into my mind viz ;- improve your presentation skills which is very essential skill set for HR ; for you may someday think of training as a career. Additionally this would help you to develop contacts in the industry and use it for effective networking. Remember tomorrow's best jobs would come from networking rather than job sites or recruitment consultants.Regards,Rajat Joshi

Same profile? Not at the moment, but yes, in my initial phase of career. As I mentioned earlier, it would help you to brush up on your presentation skills and client-building skills. Moreover, it would give you the confidence when you appear for interviews at a later stage. Use this experience to your advantage by understanding the market and yourself, and how you are adding value to the organization. Once self-analysis is done frankly, it would lead you to the route where success awaits you!
