I am very much glad to get the various informations on this topic.
On coming to previous employer verification point.
1) I agree with Bank statement of last 2 or 3 months.
2) I agree with Payslips of the companies (There are chances where in our people are smart enough to manipulate the payslips) those cases are exempted.
3) Background verification directly or from third party verification agencies ( If the particular employee is very close to the HR person then there are few HR person who will support the employee by their mutual understanding) If the HR is genuine person so it can be accepted.
4) ITR or Form 16. I hope this won't match to find the recent salary. This will help to find the salary that he got for the entire year. If the employee would have got the increments in last few months back how can we find out the recent salary from that?
