Balancing Work and Study: Did I Make the Right Choice to Start My Career Early?

rekhaduck@gmail.com
My name is Rekha. I am pursuing B.Com final year through Distance Education (O.U). I am very ambitious. I like to start my career early because I want to gain more professional knowledge and I don't want to be a fresher after my graduation. That's why I have decided to work and study. Currently, I am working in a company in the sales department. They are offering me 8000/month. Can you please suggest whether I have made the correct decision or not?

Dear Rekha,

You have made the right decision. But do remember to concentrate and complete your B.Com. on time. Try to gain hands-on experience in ERP and Tally, which might be useful for you in the near future. If you are planning to pursue an MBA, then go ahead.

All the best!

Narendra

Perusing a B.Com degree and working in the Sales Department... Do the work you perform have any inter-link? Anyway, good thought, but implementation should be after analyzing... All the best.

Hi Rekha,

You have informed that you have started your career with the sales department. Could you please clarify what type of sales you are into?

Hi Rekha,

Good to see your zeal for learning things earlier and preparing yourself for the future. Wishing you all the very best. As you have chosen to work in sales, always choose a profession that serves you a "PRISM," i.e.:

Passion - should cover your likes, willingness, and skills.
Race - Healthy competition, growth, and success.
Intelligence - self-development, constant learning, and progress.
Society - should allow you to fulfill your social responsibilities.
Money - Of course - money matters :)

Good luck.

Hi,

It's very good that you want to start off soon. I say it's good that you are working while studying in correspondence because correspondence courses carry less weightage in terms of career prospects compared to regular courses. I believe it's a good option to work while pursuing studies, especially in correspondence.

Dear Rekha,

The way you have chosen is good, but you have to do more on your job and your studies. Please don't go for others' suggestions. Believe in your hard work, yourself, and be confident. Definitely, you will reach a good position in your life.

Hi Rekha, How are you?

Look dear, Narendra is right, and I would also suggest you concentrate on your studies first. Later, you can start with MBA in Finance, HRM, or so. You are currently working and earning 8000, which is nice, but it's somewhat strange that you are working in a sales department. Not bad, but you should consider moving towards the accounting/finance direction.

Rekha, it's good, yeah. You are already in the profession before completing education. It's good. My plan is to go for an MBA after completing B.Com.

That's the best decision because after the completion of your education, you will have good work experience. And you won't have to struggle as many students do to get a job.

So keep learning new things and enhance your work experience. After all, everything is counted. All the best...

Hi, Rekha,

I am a professor in an Engineering college, and I appreciate you for taking up the job along with your studies with the objective of gaining experience. But as a student, you need to extract the maximum from your study center. Since it is O.U, you can prepare your study material in all subjects by referring to the books available in various other libraries or on the internet. In today's competitive environment, it is your strong basics that can take you to higher levels in life.

All the best,
Sanjay

Hi Rekha,

It's good that you have started working early. You will no longer be a fresher by the time you become a graduate. But do you want to make your career in sales and marketing? Because you said that you are working in the Sales Department. If so, then it is the right decision to make. But please don't hamper your studies thinking that you already have a job and are no longer a fresher. You should achieve good marks in graduation because many big organizations give equal stress to academics besides experience. Another factor why you need to score really good marks is that you are pursuing your graduation through Distance Learning, but most recruiters prefer candidates who have completed their graduation through a full-time regular course.

Anyways, please plan your goals ahead and also map out the road to reach them and execute accordingly. Gain more and more professional knowledge, keep yourself updated. If you are skillful, knowledgeable, and passionate, then nothing can stop you.

Wish you all the best.

Sharmistha

Hi Rekha!

You remember one thing: never do any job that is not in your field. Since you are working in marketing and studying B.Com, which is related to accounts, you should look for a job in the accounts department. This will help build your career because having experience in the field of your education makes you more valuable; otherwise, chances are rare.

I hope you understand what I am saying.

Hi Rekha,

You can join; it's a good offer when you are a beginner. But keep updating yourself; the market for ERP is good, and maintain a good hands-on experience with SAP. It will boost your career.

Thanks and good luck.

Hi Rekha,

Obviously, it is a good decision to work while studying, but in my opinion, you should consider working in the accounts department. This is because B.Com and sales belong to different categories. Therefore, I suggest that you pursue a job in the accounts department as it will be more beneficial for you.

Arshad
