Exploring HR Challenges in Shopping Malls: Do They Face Attrition and Workforce Issues?

Hi there,

Mall culture is coming in a big way to our country. The type and number of human resources recruited in these departmental stores and malls are also very huge. So, I am thinking of taking up some research project in this sector. I just wanted to know from you all, do these places, like BPOs, face problems of attrition, young workforce-related issues, etc.? Are there any peculiar good HR practices in this area? I would like to know more about this.

Also, I would like to know whether I can take up any project related to this. Waiting for your views on this.

Regards, Sneha. 😊

Hi Sneha,

Mall culture is also termed as retailing. The workforce that works there is mostly not very educated. If you work as a store manager or something similar, then retailing is very good with growth. Regarding you doing a project in this area, I would say challenges will be very few as attrition caused in this sector is mostly due to compensation-related issues. But when you do something in BPOs, you get to explore a lot of dimensions of HR. Retailing is going to be very big in India with players like Walmart coming here. As of now, there is nothing very special in the field practically speaking. Moreover, you should do a project that would help you get a job, and BPO serves as a good option. But if you're interested in retailing, you can go ahead and try to explore it. As my knowledge is very limited in retailing, I will let you know in case I find something good in retailing.

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your views. Whatever you said is very true, but I don't know there is something about these places that attracts me to think about it. Maybe I will try to relate my thoughts more clearly. I will try reading some more about it or try talking to people who are in the sector of retailing already.

Can you help me find some interesting topics for my research project for my second year MBA-HR? I am very much interested in topics related to OB, i.e., Organizational Behavior. Can you guide me on that? I will try to collect as much information as I can about malls and also study the feasibility of the project.

Regards,
Sneha.

Hi Sneha,

In OB, you can go for the topic "Study of Organizational Culture." That can work for malls as well.

Hi,

O.B. = employees' perception towards the probable causes of attrition with special reference to XYZ Company or employees' perception towards the non-monetary benefits provided by XYZ Company. Try these topics out. It's easier to gain information on these topics.
