Understanding Minimum Wage Zones in Maharashtra: Are They Unique to the State or Nationwide?

What do the 3 zones i.e. Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3 in Minimum Wages - Maharashtra represent? Are the Zones state-specific or are they the same throughout India?

Also, what is Special Allowance? Is it a combination of DA with something else?

Please find below my explanation on your doubts.

Zone-1 consists of all municipal corporations.

Zone-2 consists of all major municipalities which have a population of more than 1 lakh.

Zone-3 consists of all areas that are not covered under Zone-1 and Zone-2.

Special allowance is nothing but DA because it increases based on the rise in CPI points. You need to pay this special allowance in addition to the basic salary, or you can merge this special allowance into the basic salary.

Minimum Wages Act - Zones in Maharashtra

ZONE I: shall comprise of the areas falling within the limits of Municipal Corporation.

ZONE II: shall comprise of the areas falling within the limits of 'A' & 'B' grade Municipal Councils.

ZONE III: shall comprise of all other areas in the state, not included in Zone I and Zone II.
