Feeling Stuck in My Career: How Can I Navigate This Job Dilemma and Find a Way Forward?

Hi all,

I am 28 years old and I have completed my Master of Computer Application (MCA) from West Bengal University of Technology in June 2006. After completing my post-graduation, I have done many courses in Software Development, but didn't get any suitable job. For that reason, I had to try some different fields of job, like Back office Administration, Consultancy Services, and finally, System Support in Desktop Systems.

In July 20, I got an opportunity to move from my last job. The present job seemed a little bit interesting. They provide System Support (Level 1) for a software called Omnesys based on Share Trading Functionality with Linux Server and Windows 2003 Server Platform.

So, I thought it may have prospects. Although they asked about my expected salary and I asked for a little increment, they told me to join at the last salary that I had drawn. Assuming there are better prospects, I left my last job and joined here as a Junior Engineer.

But after joining, my life became hell. They mentioned a 3-month training period, but in reality, there is nobody to train me. I have not been assigned to any job or project. I am just staying in the office from 9 am to 7:30 pm without doing any work. And now, the coworkers are also behaving badly towards me. They are not allowing me to be present in the room where I have been asked to sit. So, I am now roaming around outside the office.

Since I don't have any specific skills or expertise and have worked in various fields, it is not easy for me to transition from one job to another.

I do not have enough money to take courses like CCNA, MCSE, or RHCE. Also, I am confused about which course will boost my career now. I have done courses in Software Development but have not been able to secure a job.

In this scenario, can anybody tell me what I should do now? I am attaching my updated resume with this email. Please reply soon because I cannot continue this job any longer and also cannot sit at home leaving the job.

Hi Arijit,

Stop worrying and think about what needs to be done. I suggest trying to obtain a Microsoft certification in DOT NET. Hopefully, this course has a good reputation in the market. Don't wait for anybody or anything; you are the one who has to build yourself up. So, it is high time to go rock... "Never ever give up."

Don't worry! These are all part of the game. Never give up without trying your maximum. If you're not getting a job, there must be different reasons. Just find out what the reason is. If you can manage that, then there is no problem. If you can't manage that, then start searching for a new job.

Most of the time, employees don't get proper jobs because the boss is not confident about the employee's skills and doesn't want to take a risk. It's the employee's duty to create that confidence. Stop blaming the company for not providing training. Try to learn on your own by observing others without disturbing them.

Thank you to all of you for replying and showing me some ways. It is very hard to go through this phase, and I am really giving up my hope for this job. I know there must be some office politics; I have never faced it this way before, so it is really shocking for me. I also blame myself for leaving my last job and running after that uncertain career. However, it is also true that no one can imagine what the office environment will be like at the time of the interview. I have to look forward and have decided to leave the job.

Guys, I have some questions at this point for you:
Since I am leaving my current job and currently have no job offer in hand, there may be some days or months gap in my professional career. So, my questions are:
1) How can I manage this gap (suppose in months) in my Resume?
2) Can this gap affect my professional career in any way?
3) What kind of explanation should I give in my next interview regarding the discontinuity?

Please tell me all your opinions and suggestions.
