Charges For Reference Check By Previous Companies ???

kartiken
Dear All,
Recently a new candidate joined us. When his previous company was communicated for the reference check, it told that they charge for the same.
This charge for ref check by previous company I have heard for first time as I kwow the situation can be vice -versa too at times. This is just like give and take.
Can you tell if the same carries weight and is possible?

A totally wrong practise to charge for complying with reference check. It is the HR's duty and not a luxury we are requesting them to provide.
I have had a wierd experience with the HR of premier evolvics, Coimbatore - who told me that according to her taking time for refernce checks is a waste of time. Wish the company knew that she was a waste of time there!
You just need to educate them and tell them "it makes no sense, and please don't make a poor image out of your organization!" All this info should go to the senior management of the company - just write a mail to their CEO or MD, and ask - who created this policy which creates a bad image for their co?

These charges are possible if the company has huge staff strength or have multiple subsidaries or a regional HQ status and HR is on a shared services model. HR get to charge a fee in exchange for the transational services provided. Charges are usually based on time- and complexity related (how much time needed to complete the transation and level of expertise needed). This is one method to transform HR from a cost centre to a profit centre.

Dont make it business. Becuase you will then hear what you will like to hear - and not the fact when we do reference checks. That just an absurd idea.
Don't tell me the reference check with one co is so huge that you need to charge it as "a luxury' to receive information on someone before hiring.
Guys why dont you charge something else!!!!

Dear Kartiken
To most, it may be a weird practice or an absurd idea because we are charting into unfamiliar ground. Professionally, I have come across 3 such organizations where HR adopts a fee-based approach in conducting their HR services. 1st company is a global supply-chain company; the 2nd company is also a global company with HQ in Finland and lastly a shared-services (HR, IT, Finance & Training) organization with 450 staff-strength supporting 80,000 employees across the world. In all 3 companies, HR itself is a separate entity and is accountable for its own bottom-line.
In the incident that you have quoted, we can't confirm whether it is a hoax or not. But something for sure is that the leaders of the 3 organizations that I have quoted, are far-sighted and dynamic enough to break away from norms and succeed in what they strongly believed in.
