Struggling to Engage Employees in Manufacturing? Seeking Creative Ideas for Fun Activities

Dear Senior Members,

I am working as an Executive ER in a Dubai-based firm, which is almost like a manufacturing organization. I have earlier worked as an ER in a BPO firm in India, wherein I initiated numerous "Fun at Work" and other employee engagement activities. However, since I have joined this organization in Dubai, I have not been able to plan or think of any employee engagement activities here.

It would be a great help to me if any of the members or respective seniors could come up with some good ideas for engaging employees in a manufacturing organization.

The few things that I could think of...

1. Have frequent open-house discussions on safety at work. If any suggestions are given, try to work out the feasibility of incorporating them at your workplace. Always follow up with your feedback; this will encourage them to give more feedback. This helps in reinforcing time and again that the organization cares about them.

2. Have a parenting workshop for them and career counseling for employees' children.

3. Have yoga and pranayama sessions every week. Motivate them to attend these sessions by spreading awareness of the importance of good health.

4. Have a cap day or something when they can wear different types of caps (as they must be having a uniform, so maybe one can't have traditional, etc.).

5. Try to organize music sessions, dance sessions, or other kinds of entertainment after working hours.

What I think all employees, whether they belong to a manufacturing company or service industry, are looking out for is a healthy, comfortable, and caring workplace. If we, HR professionals, keep this in mind, we can really make a difference.

It's great to hear that you are working abroad. Every organization has its different ways to keep employees engaged in activities like motivational training programs or celebrating festivals and birthdays. During these events, we can conduct many management games, wherein everyone will actively participate. Every department should announce the best achiever or best employee of the period. We may celebrate color days wherein work will not suffer. We can also have brain teasers, weekly quizzes available to every employee.

Here are a few techniques for your information:

1. Puzzle of the Week: One puzzle will be displayed on the notice board two days before, and the answer will be taken by Friday. The solver will be rewarded in the meeting.

2. A Comedy Drama by Staff: Script to be provided by HR based on practical situations.

3. Birthday Celebration

4. Talent Show: Participants can showcase their talents through dance, singing, playing musical instruments, telling jokes, or mono-acting.

5. Team Game: Activities like shawl folding, blind hitting, saree-wearing competition, ramp walk by gents, relay competition, cricket series, carom competition (single/double), and Dumb Charades.

6. Others: Musical chair competition for both gents and ladies, extempore speeches.

7. Management Game on team activities and coordination with all contingencies.

8. Enjoying a Motivational Movie Together

9. See the Clip and Interpret: Group representatives will interpret different clips focusing on themes like "Believe in yourself," "Survival of the fittest," and "Be confident and grow together."
