Seeking Career Advice: Is It Too Late to Start as a Software Developer at 34?

I need advice from all senior and experienced members here, especially those from the IT/software field.

I want to get a job as a Software Developer. This is my story...

I am 34 years old, male. I completed my graduation in 2000 as a Mechanical engineer (BE Mechanical). After that, I worked as a 'Consultant' at Silverline Technologies Ltd., Mumbai, from January 2002 to May 2002. Although Silverline is an IT organization, it was not a software project. Several others and I were removed from Silverline as they did not have any projects due to a slowdown during that time. In January 2004, I started my own small computer institute. However, in June 2008, I had to close it down due to incurring significant losses. Since then (from July 2008), I have been working as a Lecturer on an ad hoc (contract) basis at an Engineering college.

During January 2000 to December 2001 and June 2002 to December 2003, I was either unemployed or did jobs not even worth mentioning (although I tried hard to secure a good job as a Software Developer). I did not receive any appointment letter or experience certificate from the companies I worked for during this period. Due to financial problems, it was and still is not possible for me to remain unemployed for an extended period.

To make a long story short, I have never been able to secure that elusive job as a software developer.

Can I get a job now at the age of 34 as a software developer? I am particularly concerned about my age as some of my friends in the software field have mentioned that at my age, I should have been a Project Manager. I am proficient in Java, JSP, Servlets. I acknowledge that I have made a mess of my career. However, I am now determined to make amends.

If you are really capable of developing software, then you will surely get a job because the engagement of people matters with the quality of work and capabilities, not age. Even if a software developer is 100 years old and can do the job better, they will be given first preference.

As a B.E. graduate and mature individual, identify your weaknesses and work on overcoming them. I understand it's challenging, but you need to delve deeper into this. Drawing from your experience as a lecturer and consultant, explore other opportunities that can contribute to your bright future.

Look for courses that align with your interests in the IT field. Choose the right specialization. This isn't the time for exploring various options like a fresh graduate. When considering training institutes, assess the maximum support they can offer.

It seems like you are skilled in Java, JSP, Servlets. Consider courses like Pega, Vignette, which are in high demand and candidates with these skills are highly sought after. Alternatively, pursue certifications such as PMP, PMO, ERP.

Following Shivakuti's advice, update your profile on all job portals. Before that, professionally prepare your CV and seek guidance from an expert.

One should always try before coming to a conclusion. Do make efforts, but yes, experience and age matter in the corporate world. In case you need a job in a particular field, you need to show experience and prove your worth. For you, it won't be an easy task; out of 100 applications you would send, the chances would be less than 3%. But don't lose hope and keep on trying. You never know what might click at any given time. Luck also plays a crucial role in life, but yes, chances and opportunities would be very, very, very low. If you have the capabilities, turn them around for yourself.

Please keep this in mind: The more you think about the negative aspects that surround your opportunity, the less you see the opportunity. The issue will not be a problem unless you see it as a problem.

There are more facts that concern your selection for a good job other than age. Fine-tune yourself to the position you are hunting for. If that calls for additional skills development, see the best way that it can be gained.

Presentation matters! Communication matters. Communication does not mean just flawless language, but the positive self-image you carry and the way you put it across in front of others. Concentrate on your skills and how you can present yourself better. Carry appropriate material that talks about your skills. It's not just enough to dream and long to be there, but you also need the knowledge to get you there.

Your problem here is age. You cannot do anything about it, but yes, you can grow older by worrying about it. Feel young! Feel good about yourself!

Everyone has a rough patch in life, but that does not make you look miserable unless you prefer to do so. What matters is the confidence to keep going despite all things that happen in life. Life is just 10% of what happens to you and 90% of what you make out of what happens to you!

You are just 34, nothing to worry about. I would say, hereafter, keep your steps in a right path. Plan yourself and never ever give up. Today's market scenario is such that employers look for professionals, so make yourself professional; yes, equip yourself. You have to take up the course as suggested by Mr. Venugogal, do certification, and that is very important. To my knowledge, you could opt for DOT NET (.NET) course with Microsoft certification which costs you 50k. So, wake up Herambh, the time has come, get ready for the RACE.... Keep rocking....

It happens. It happened to me as well. I mean, there comes a time when you realize that 'you are caught in a wrong job'. But then, as advised by the learned members here, stay positive - that's the only thing which can make things good for you.

Additionally, I would suggest that you keep some software developed in your bag. They do not have to be comprehensive, but just like trailers of a movie. I'm sure by now you must have a fair idea of what corporates want. At the time of the interview, find an opportunity to show a demo of those to the interviewer - that will give you an edge over others.

Having worked in the IT recruitment industry for more than 5 years, with my experience, I can say that age does matter. I have due respect for the comments posted by fellow members, but I have seen various good candidates getting rejected due to age, as sometimes there are team issues. If you want to start as a fresher-developer, your teammates will be around age 21/22. Even tier 1 companies may not entertain your application.

Since you have considerable experience as a trainer, I would suggest that you should acquire more knowledge and skills as a trainer. As you are good in Java, you can acquire Sun certification and approach colleges and computer institutes. Additionally, you can pursue a master's degree in computers, which will open the door to pursue MPhil/PhD and head towards becoming a professor in college. This process will take time but in the end, I'm sure you will certainly excel in your career. The industry is in a real crunch for good trainers, and even universities are facing the same problem. Age 34 is nothing if you decide and put your efforts in one direction.

Hey, don't worry. You will definitely get a job in IT, or you can work as a freelancer for IT projects. By showcasing your work, you can secure a good job, as the IT market may take more time to recover. Freelancing is a good option to demonstrate your technical skills. :)

I may be younger than you, but honestly, I will suggest something to you. Don't dwell on your past; focus on the future. Always remember, the beauty of your dreams lies in your future. If age were a significant factor, then all the great achievers in their lives or careers would never have succeeded. Remember, every successful person has a painful past to share. One day, when you achieve something, you will realize its importance. The software industry is an emerging field where your skills and capabilities count, not your age. I believe confidence might be lacking in you. Based on your post, I don't see you as a failure; you have struggled, which is a part of life.

Don't be concerned about what your friends are saying; believe in yourself, do your best, and I am confident you will emerge as a winner. As you said, your age is 34. I want to share one of my friend's experiences. He graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering. After that, he worked as a marketing executive for 5 years at Reliance. However, he became fed up with that job, and in November 2006, he decided to join a VC++ course. After completing the course, he attended nearly 5 to 6 interviews, but he was rejected within the first 15 minutes each time.

Despite facing rejections, he persisted in his job search, and eventually landed a job as a software developer in VC++. Within a year, he received an "Excellent" rating for his performance, and in another 2 years, he was promoted to a team lead position.

I share this story to emphasize that age doesn't matter in IT. What truly matters is your skills. That's all. Best of luck!

Dude, you are the '34 NOTTT 64', you have your whole life in front of you, and the best part is that you want to get into a profession that pays. It's not like you want to abandon everything and go climb the top ten mountains of the world from your savings (which I think is totally cool). Put your head down and go for it, and remember to say this every time you get up in the morning 'I AM YOUNG'. Start believing in it and ALL the best. Who knows, you could be a late bloomer....

Don't let anyone put you down because of your age; which in any case is quite acceptable. You don't have to indulge in self-pity when you have been a conscientious, hard-working, ethical person; not to mention qualified and experienced. I am quite impressed by your experiences. It is commendable that you have been an entrepreneur as well. You just need a good resume writer who can focus on your strong points and prepare a good saleable resume, and oodles of self-confidence. I am 45, working as a project manager in software companies. I am in a different country now, and still, I don't feel age is a constraint. I switched companies twice this year.

The age you stated is not actually overaged. The people from Defence, after completing their first slot of employment, even get the job and enjoy life. A few of my friends were in the Airforce and Army at the age of 35-40. They took VRS and joined companies, really enjoying life.

If you are good in software development, you will get the right job. Just update your skills and knowledge and attend some YOGA courses, preferably from the ART OF LIVING ORGANIZATION. That's all, MY DEAR FRIEND.
