Career Dilemma: Should I Stick with Banking or Switch to IT After 2 Years?

Hi Friends,

Happy Friendship Day!

I completed my graduation in Bachelor of Information Technology, passed with first division, and landed a job with an International Bank. I have a total of 2 years of experience in banking.

I am a little confused about whether I should continue my career in banking or switch to IT. If I choose IT, will my banking experience be taken into account or not?

Hi Meenakshi,

Happy Friendship Day!

I am Phani Kumar, working for a corporate bank. When it comes to your question, the banking industry now also requires IT professionals. Given your experience in banking, you could excel in the IT department of a bank. The question arises: why do you want to change sectors?

1. Is it for your job satisfaction, driven by your interest in IT?
2. Are you feeling bored with banking?
3. Are you seeking a compensation variation?

It depends on your reasons. If it's the first one, transitioning to IT would be a good choice. This desire may persist even after a decade in banking, which is perfectly fine. If it's the second reason, feeling bored is common in any job after a certain period, prompting a desire for change in job profile, company, or sector. If it's the third reason, indeed, IT generally offers better compensation. (You didn't specify whether you are in operations, marketing, or both departments.)

Typically, banking experience is not directly transferable to IT. However, if you have worked in the IT department of a bank, your product knowledge may be valued in an IT role.

These are purely my opinions.

Hi Meenakshi,

In my opinion, your decision is good because the IT sector is a dominant sector compared to others. They pay more, offer a lot of on-site opportunities, and have a five-day work week, among other benefits.

I am familiar with the banking sector; people working in banks often work longer hours than typical office settings. While the IT sector also has its challenges, it is not as demanding as the banking sector.

This is purely my personal opinion; the choice is ultimately yours. Wishing you all the best.
