Are Graduate Engineer Trainees' Stipends Subject to PF and ESI Deductions?

We have engaged apprentices under the Apprenticeship Act of 1961. Now, we are planning to engage Graduate Engineer/Diploma Engineer Trainees and will pay them a fixed monthly compensation in the form of a stipend. Will the stipend attract PF & ESI liabilities?

If you are engaging them under the guidance of Director/Advisor Apprenticeship Act 1961, then only can you pay them a stipend. If your Standing Orders Act has the provision to accommodate engineers/diploma holders under stipend, then only can you pay them a stipend. If you are paying a valid/legal stipend, then there is no need to pay PF or ESI contributions. In case of queries, please do call.
