Comprehensive Guidance on PhD Thesis Regarding Performance Appraisal

Hi, I am doing a Ph.D. on the topic "Performance Appraisal in selected Indian enterprises." I need some guidance on literature review, research methodology, and hypothesis for the topic. I need to ask what kind of books, articles, journals, etc., I should refer to and how I should write the review. Should it be paraphrased or in any other way? I also need to know about the research methodology. I am a little confused about how to frame the hypothesis for the research. I honestly want to conduct good research, and I hope there will be someone who can help me in the above respects. Please, please, someone help me! himcool

Is there no PhD guideline in the university you are considering to enroll?

You should always, preferably, paraphrase others' work, giving due recognition by citing the source. It is essential to read the most recent works on the topic, especially reviewed articles. By the time information is published in books, it will be a few years old. You have to read a lot, digest the information, synthesize and evaluate the various approaches, decide on the aim and objectives of your study, develop a conceptual framework for the study, clearly state the hypotheses, and prepare a cross-mapping matrix of the objectives, elements of the framework, and the methods you will employ to ensure that the results are valid, reliable, and triangulated.

Thank you very much, Sir, for your valuable guidance. Sir, I am currently facing two issues regarding the literature review.

Firstly, theses and books on Performance Appraisal available in our university library are old. Can I use these older theses and books for my literature review?

Secondly, I have come across some recent articles in "HR Review" and "IIM Review" discussing Performance Appraisal, or as it is now known, Performance Management System. Can I use these articles?

Regarding books, should I opt for newer ones even though the available theses are old and cannot be considered new?

Please provide me with your guidance. I am eagerly awaiting your reply.

The simple and plain answer is NO; it's not enough to rely on old thesis and new books. Search the web and find new abstracts at Emerald: Welcome to Emerald. Then write to the authors of articles you are interested in, after finding their email by searching their universities' websites. The authors usually oblige and send a copy.

You are doing a Ph.D., so take your guide's help for framing the hypothesis. Also, check your university research library to see if there is any database software that stores articles from journals.

Parallelly, start researching the companies you want to target so that time is saved.
