Torn Between IT and Finance for MBA Major: Which Path Best Complements My Engineering Background?

mohdnaveed03@gmail.com
Hi,

I completed a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Electronics and Electrical Engineering and then pursued an MBA. Initially, I was inclined towards choosing IT as my major and HR as my minor. However, I am currently facing a dilemma between selecting IT or Finance as my major field of study. I seek your guidance on determining the most suitable combination that aligns with my engineering background, ensuring that my MBA specialization complements it and enhances my career prospects.

Although I have a preference for not pursuing a career in marketing, I am open to considering it if it significantly benefits my professional growth.

The available streams offered by my college are:
- Finance
- HR
- Marketing
- IT
- Retail Management

Thank you.

Dear mohdnaveed03,

Select a subject as per your interest. You are best to judge yourself. There is no need to be part of the rat race. Do what you want to do. Markets change and colors change very rapidly. Is it not necessary that the field which is up today will always remain up? If you follow the rat race, then in the future, you might criticize your decision. If you choose a field according to your interest, it will not only give you a competitive advantage in the long run, but it will also save you from burning out during a downturn.

If you want to play another's game (safe game), then you can go into IT or finance. It depends on whether you want to die happy or you want to die wealthy.

I have completed a diploma in Pharmacy, and soon after, I started working in the pharmaceutical industry as a Marketing Executive. Simultaneously, I pursued a Bachelor's degree in IT, which has now been completed. Currently, I am working as a Business Development Manager.

Planning for an MBA

I am planning to apply for an MBA. Could you please suggest which stream I should opt for that would enhance my job prospects upon completion?

Thanks and Regards,

It is always at your discretion to understand the nature of your own career roadmap—your area of interest vs. area of specialization vs. current job openings vs. the same's scope. First, set that, only then will you be able to make a conscious choice between electives of an MBA or any other professional course.
