Is It Fair to Charge Service Fees for Takeout When There's No Waiter Service?

Hi All,

I work in a resort as a manager. We include service charges in our rooms, restaurants, etc. A complaint was lodged at my office recently, stating that we should not collect service charge for our "food to go" items since there is no waiter service involved. Is this right?

For room services provided, only service tax is applicable.

Foods provided at the restaurant are not eligible for service tax. However, food provided in the room will be liable for service tax.

Hi Dinesh,
Thanks for your prompt reply. Is there a hotel policy or law on service charges where you are based for your post? Although I agree with you, I believe there is a basis from which these points were taken.

Hi rguph,

What's the significant difference between a service tax and service charge? I have my ideas but I would like to have yours too.
