Feeling Out of Place in the Aviation Industry: Should I Stay or Seek a New Opportunity?

Hi friends,

I am new at Cite HR. My question is all about the aviation industry. I feel I am not fit for this industry. Earlier, I was in the manufacturing industry as an executive secretary to the managing director and CEO. I had a good reputation in the office, and that job was giving me a lot of confidence. My boss was also very dynamic and intelligent, and I learned a lot from him. I was handling lots of things there, but suddenly, due to some mishappening, I left from there. Now I am in the aviation industry, and the people are not professional at all.

Please send some comments/advice/suggestions. Should I leave this job or wait for a better opportunity, or what else...

I'll suggest that you take time out and carry out an assessment on yourself. You can try SWOT framework - evaluate your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Doing this appraisal will help you discover who you are, where your interest lies, and what you have a passion for.

You need to be serious as you are coming across as unstable and unreliable. Find what you want to do or enjoy doing, then build competence around it. The earlier you start, the quicker you get to your destination. Wish you well.

What role are you currently in, for example, the same as an EA? How is it different from your earlier role?

Whatever the issue, take it as an opportunity and do your best to drive it in your favor.

I advise that you stick to this place for a couple of more months. Probably the new environment, ethics, and culture are causing anxiety in you. Please do not panic. Don't consider quitting the job because you don't know what your next job has in store for you. Instead, consider this as a challenge and take it up with enthusiasm.

Even if nothing improves after a couple of months, take this as a major experience and remind yourself not to repeat the mistakes.

P.S: Running away from problems is not an option. It does not solve the problem.

I feel that you need to take stock in a more realistic way, i.e., in your previous job, you were working very close to a source of power, and this source of power depended on you for a lot of things. In your current job, it might be a lot more process-driven, and you might be missing the sense of power more than the mental exercise. In case you cannot take it anymore, I suggest you start looking for a change. Not for God's sake, don't leave in haste as any gaps between two employments discount your value as a professional. As a salaried person, your best asset is what has been your employment track record and how much value you have given rather than what you aspire for and what you want.

In my perception, your first company had a good system through which you were able to work smoothly, and you might miss that kind of system in your new assignment. Moving from one company to another is not a solution. Make your grip firm in this environment and initiate things in a way that you create your own working atmosphere, which will help you work and feel better. As someone once told me, we cannot change others but can change ourselves. Try to adapt yourself to this industry as you have the chance to learn new things, which will yield results one day.

Stick with the current job. First, you need to find out the reasons for dissatisfaction. Then, assess how many of these reasons are within your control to solve, and how many are due to your role, responsibilities, or working environment, which can be addressed through negotiation and positive confrontation with team members or your boss. It takes time to adjust to a new place, so wait for some time before making a decision.

I think you should just stay and suck it up. I know it's different, but that's how most REAL jobs are. You need to stay and gain experience for at least a year, then you can maybe look for something a little better. You should be proud of yourself and feel good about having a "real" job. First of all, you have not explained what you felt was not professional.

Each and every industry differs in the way it functions. Sometimes it will be so systematic, and documented procedures will be followed (like IT/ITES); sometimes, no systems would exist at all.

This would be because of the nature of the industry, the way the business is, or it may just be that the type of people working there are not caring enough to hold their professional manners. Nothing in life or profession comes in the way we prefer - perfectly fitting our ideas.

Rather than worrying, I'd suggest you to see what best can be done from your end to work better even under such circumstances. It is not adjusting, but it is creating new skills and improving your competencies. You will have a lot to learn. Until now, you had people to teach you, share their knowledge, and inspire you. From now on, you will have to search for it yourself. It's a part of learning.

I am also facing a similar problem as all my 5 years of experience was in marketing and being in a good position in sales. I changed my domain to BPO, and now I find myself in the same situation you are in now! So, I have come to the conclusion that you should do whatever you can and only be where you fit in and do not work anywhere if you are not satisfied or if you don't have value there.

I think you are in a culture shock. The best thing you can do is study the culture of the people and the organization you are in now, then adjust with the system. If you can't, pray that you will. Moreover, you get to know the boons and banes of an organization when you actually start working there, and even in a similar industry, different organizations have different work cultures! Try to extract the best out of this situation and live up to the expectations of your new boss. However, keep looking out for better opportunities so that if things don't improve over time, you can consider a move because dissatisfaction from the job will affect the quality of your work and won't do any good to you and your company. I am in corporate, but in my last organization, I was associated with India's most reputed retail company. In my current role, I am in Strategic HR and facing a number of difficulties throughout the day. I have never seen such kind of culture before, but I am striving to change that as per the guidelines provided by management. This is what is called corporate life; adversity is inevitable, Neah.

So, try to make new friends there and keep yourself busy. Always expect less and do more for others; then you can survive.
