Understanding Learning vs. Training in HR: What's the Real Difference and Scope?

Dcostap
Hi,

I would like to know the difference between Learning and Development and Training & Development. What is their scope in the HR department?

Dear P. D'Costa,

I opine that L&D and T&D are essentially the same. The only difference lies in their nomenclature.

L&D (Learning) is the newer term, aimed at making participants feel important, less intimidated, more open, and participative. They are not being 'trained' but rather 'being requested to learn.' And, it sounds better, doesn't it?

The process and procedures for L&D remain exactly the same as those you would follow for T&D. Therefore, regardless of what you call it, training will always be training and will continue to hold significant importance in HR.

Prashant is right. One is customer- or client-centered, while the other one is trainer-centered. Just as educational establishments are moving away from concentrating on teaching by the tutor to learning by the students, there is a move in HR departments too.
