How Can I Fast-Track My Career from Recruitment Executive to HR Leader?

Hi Everybody,

I am Yamini Nithya. I am working as a Recruitment Executive in a consultancy based in Chennai. I just completed an MBA in HR & Finance and recently started a new job two months ago.

I am keen on achieving significant career growth in HR. Can you please advise me on the steps I should take to progress in my career? Currently, I am working as an Executive - Recruiter. How long might it take for me to advance to roles such as Senior Recruiter, Assistant Manager, and Manager? I understand that performance plays a crucial role, but I would appreciate having a career growth plan and an approximate timeframe.

My ultimate goal is to become a Head of Recruiter/HR. I would greatly appreciate your guidance on how to reach this ambition.

I would like to say that as far as your career growth in HR is concerned, it depends on you. You may achieve a better position by enhancing your knowledge of HR and communication skills. As you invest time, opportunities will come knocking at your door, but the key condition is having professional HR knowledge.

Try to enhance your knowledge while you are working. Take up courses related to HR and keep your self up to date in developing HR trends.
Have short term goals and work towards them. After one is achieved eye for the other with better improvements. Learn from the mistakes and try to improve your self.
Also while you are on the run………………….don't forget to slow down once in a while and check whether you are on the right track!!!

Hi,

We are slowly moving towards an era of role-based organization rather than the current structure of designation-based. What you may like to do is to figure out by various means/tools as to what roles are more suitable for your type of personality. Roles will keep on changing with the growth of the business, and we need to constantly adapt to such changes. In another decade or so, we can very well expect shared HR resources for the industry, which is already a practice for large group organizations. The point I am stressing out here is that we have this block in our mind of growth vis-a-vis designations, but that will not be the case in the future. Our belief in ourselves is what would take us forward.

You have the intention to grow and grow. Keep that intention alive, which is very important. Four factors are important: Official, professional, personal, and social. Read good books, papers, journals as a continuous habit. Talk to people whom you can help and also whom can help you. Watch very carefully about the happenings around you. Update your knowledge and skills. Be polite always, be slow in action, and be very cautious when you react. Your words will develop you, so always be very optimistic in your words and actions. Make people feel that you are good, dependable, and worthy. Always plan your activities and have a plan of action in a note. Preferably have a whiteboard or blackboard at home to note down your plan of action (I follow this). Carry out religiously and sincerely. Be an open-minded personality. So the list goes on, Nithya, and there is no end to it. To end, your attitude decides what you are.

Nithya, you have completed your MBA in HR, yet you seem to doubt your HR capabilities since you mentioned being a recruiter. However, being in the recruitment field inherently makes you an HR professional. With a year of experience, successful or not, you can progress to a senior role as a Technical Recruiter.

Career Advancement in HR

The next level in HR is a Business Development Manager (BDM), responsible for recruiting recruiters, bringing in business for the company, and overseeing the allocation of work to various groups (sales recruiters, technical recruiters, and BD executives). Your next step would be as a manager. This advancement will be driven by your smart work rather than just performance or hard work. Consider ways to reach the 4th floor directly, skipping the 3rd, as you are already on the 2nd floor.
