Do HR Roles Change Across Sectors? Curious About Hospital HR Responsibilities

Anupatiyal
Dear Friends,

I want to know about the responsibilities of an HR Executive in the hospital or pharma sector because recently I received a call from a consultancy in Mumbai. They are looking to fill the position of HR Executive with experience in the hospital sector for a hospital in Bangalore. This query has sparked a question in my mind: do HR responsibilities vary in different sectors such as real estate, hospitals, pharma, telecom, BPO/KPO/LPO, etc.? Therefore, I just wanted to confirm the responsibilities of an HR Executive in a hospital and in various other sectors.

In my opinion, HR responsibilities (Recruitment & Selection, Training & Development, Compensation & Benefits, Statutory Compliance, Exit formalities, Payroll Management, etc.) are the same in every sector. So, what is unique about the hospital sector?

Kindly reply to this query as soon as possible!!

Waiting for your response!

Thanks,
Anu

Dear Anu,

I am from the healthcare sector too, and rest assured that the functions are exactly the same. It's a professional area that does not change with the industry. Just keep in mind one thing: you have to adjust and be flexible according to the needs of the company.

Dear,

Thanks for your reply. I want to state that I also know HR functions are the same everywhere. Hence, I explained to the consultancy that I have the caliber to excel in HR functions no matter what the industry is all about. However, they mentioned that their client (hospital) is looking for candidates from the same background. That's the reason I have posted this query here to understand why the hospital is emphasizing this. Could you kindly explain this to me?

Thanks,
Anu

Hi,

Your query is why do consultancies ask for people who have worked in the same sector. This is because they want individuals with previous experience in the same sector who can handle responsibilities well without requiring formal training. It reduces costs and saves time to train the employee in the relevant sector. Many companies and consultancies prefer candidates with a background and experience in the same sector.

I have encountered a similar situation while searching for a job. My profile is related to Executive Secretarial, HR, and admin roles. I hope I have answered your query to some extent.

Kind regards,
KB

Hi Anu,

I am from the hospital sector. The basic HR functions are the same. In the hospital sector, it is difficult to work within time bounds. There are three categories of employees: medical, paramedical, and non-medical. Paramedical and medical staff work in shifts, and to manage their leaves and adjust duties, you should have some knowledge about the same profession. As we all know, medical personnel are still key in the hospital industry, so sometimes it is challenging to enforce HR rules with them. In terms of benefits, some additional benefits like ICU benefits, OT benefits, etc., are applicable. If it is a hospital with fewer than 150 beds, most hospital managements look for multipurpose roles, combining HR and hospital administration. If you have any specific doubts, feel free to ask me.
