Struggling with Sleepless Nights? Here Are My Tips for a Restful Sleep – Share Yours Too!

Ash Mathew
Hello Everyone. There has been a time when I found it really difficult to sleep…but that was a long time ago.

Now, I would like to share a few tips to everyone who are deprived of sleep and try hard to sleep in the night. First – a few tips from my own kitty: (Workable solutions :))
  • Have dinner at least 2 hours before sleep. An early dinner will be helpful for easier digestion and less disturbances while sleeping – have it at 7:00 PM
  • Have a healthy dinner, not a heavy dinner:idea:. Keep it light and tasty enough to make you feel that you are filled with your choice of food. Avoid – spicy food, intake of alcohol, smoking, or even eating while doing other tasks. Just like how you try to save time, the body also tries to forget that it ever ate something on time. Eat peacefully, and slowly.
  • Avoid watching serials or movies that can create a sense of tension in your mind. Because your mind unknowingly slips into that fear and sense of anxiety and will feel very tired :!:
  • Lots of things to think about – how about choosing to think about something that will make you smile? Was that a phone call from a loved one? Or a sweet word from someone/ Or an appreciation? Feel good about urself, because you are worth it! :)
  • Listen to light music – of your choice. Walk while listening (not brisk walking, just complete your work, cleaning, or washing and keep the music on)
  • Work begins at 9:00 and ends at 7:00pm. After that – if you are still thinking about work – then you don't have a proper sense of time management. I am not kidding, I used to think a lot about work until recently I found how nice it is to FORGET work when I am away from work!
  • Try taking a hot shower before sleep (I am still trying to do this – the very thought of getting prepared to take a bath before sleep – makes me tired and I am off to the bed – so you see, I am yet to try this part. But no harm in sharing tho! )
  • Keep a pillow under your knees while sleeping. It relaxes your mind.
  • Make sure your feet is clean. Don't go for a hard wash. Just wash with Luke warm water and make sure it's clean.
  • Avoid fluid consumption at least 2 hours before bed; it will reduce the need to wake up in the middle of the night. – You know what I mean.
  • Make sure the room is dark (if you are scared – like me, use a dim bed light that gives you the feeling that – you are still aware of what's happening around)
Hey people why don't you contribute your tips too?

Thank you, Sumit... @ Suresh... that was funny - Jaldi soo javvo nahi to bhoot ayega and sleeping thinking the next day is a holiday. In my case - if I think the next day is a holiday - then it's fun time for me - I will be peaceful and watch TV... 😁 And if I know the next day - I have work... then while thinking about itself will put me to sleep 🙂 Of recent - I have been giving some good special importance to myself... never think about work after work. Think about yourself and your loved ones... they need you.

That's interesting Vivek!!!!!

I took so much time explaining it, but you gave a one-liner - and that is a hit!!! Trust me, I was laughing for a long time looking at that message.

You are right - the mind must be clear. If unable to sleep, people can try the above to induce the habit of sleeping. Trust me, I tried it, and nowadays, I sleep easily, like around 8:30 pm 😴😜🤣, and wake up at 8.

It totally depends on one's individual metabolism and habits. The suggestion Asha pointed out is really helpful if you cannot control the stress stuff.

Hope you all SLEEP WELL!!!

Cheers :)

Good post, Asha... Raviii... are you talking about eternal sleep... 😱😱 To add on, never take a nap or sleep during the daytime. By doing this, we'll become tired at night so that we go straight to bed. Also, have your favorite comfort pillows and blankets, and sleep like a baby after a tiresome day. As Vivek has said, it's again the mind, so sleep only when you feel sleepy; otherwise, get out and do something which might be boring for you. Like I try reading a book upside down 😄.

Another way to ensure a good night's sleep is to work hard throughout the day and then sleep deeply at night, like a log or a dog. 🌙🐶

An immediate remedy - read a book. Something like Reader's Digest or even a nice magazine. Avoid newspapers because you will start feeling tense and worried on seeing certain news. You need to keep your mind relaxed and stay away from spicy food at night. Wash your feet before sleep; that will really help. Develop a routine and be strict with your timings.

Don't argue with anybody before going to sleep. While going to sleep, take breaths slowly and release them 20 times. Surely, you will be in deep sleep. This practice will improve your consciousness for the next day.

Dear Asha,

Thank you for sharing information. I would like to share some information on don'ts after meals:

1. Don't walk immediately after dinner; it affects your digestive system. Walk after half an hour.
2. Don't eat fruits immediately after meals.
3. Don't smoke cigarettes after meals.
4. Don't sleep right after dinner; there should be at least a 2-hour gap.
5. Don't bathe after meals as we need more blood for digestion. If you bathe, some of the blood will flow to all parts of your body, affecting the digestion system.

I hope these tips will be helpful for you.

Those were definitely tips that came at the end of the day. Rawat... I am to assume that packs mean cigars here (or alcohol). Either way, both will affect your health. I am not saying for you or in concern of anyone who is either into drinking or smoking, but I am talking with concern about the ones who love you - and who think that you are the world to them. Think about it... Probably they would not want to lose you to getting addicted to drinking or smoking. Anything to justify yourself is self-defending!

On the lighter aspect - as a joke, it was funny. But health-wise, I would not give a thumbs up to this!!! Ravi, you count in too!

Thank you, Asha.

Though following all of Asha's tips may not always lead to success, consistently reading our Intermediate or Graduation level subject books will prove beneficial. It will definitely work. I would also like to offer a suggestion from my side.

Hi Aasha,

Those were good. One thing to add for those who sleep with a night bulb on -- keep the color of the bulb blue. I had read in some good health magazines that blue color light has a wonderful effect while one sleeps. Cheers!

Dear Sekar,

My work begins around 9:15 and ends at 7:00. You see, I stay really close, and travel time is less. So, I get enough time to sleep... and also deserve that sleep. Loss of pay will happen if you bunk on work - not kidding.

Anyways, let's see if I can come up with some good tips on being productive at work and still sleep without that gut feeling!

Thanks for the tips. I think it really helps. I would like to add on the old metaphor but true saying: "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man wise." All these tips will help us to be wise.

Hi Narendar,

I did not find it wrong from your end. But it was good that you raised that point because people out there who do it must know it's a sure way of "eternal sleeping." You never know - there are people out there who think that alcohol or sleeping pill is the best way - but the fact is: a healthy life, a clear mind free of worries, and humor are the way to have peaceful sleep. Nothing wrong in your post :-)

nrawat1983
Dear Asha,

Yes, you are right because alcohol and smoking are really very bad. They are very dangerous for health.

Narender

Usually, I sleep at 9:30 pm but have to wake up between 5:45 am - 6:00 am. However, I am a nocturnal owl.

Thank you for the very helpful tips. I am going to try them and hope they will help me sleep well. I can't sleep through the whole night even though I worked the entire day. Thanks once again.
