What Do We Mean By "BEING A PROFESSIONAL?"

Hi Freinds,
We all at this Forum are from different backgrounds,qualifications ,organisation.We keep on hearing the phrase-
"Be a Professional"...or "Lets be more Professional".
I would like to invite everybody's views and ideas on the word "PROFESSIONAL"./PROFESSIONALISM."What do we actually mean by it?
Would highly appreciate if members would give a little time for this.

In fact I had asked the same question in this forum and only Swastik replied back
"The term professional is used to cover the whole ambit of people in HR. Covering both who are into Service and those into consultancy.
Since this is a HR site we coin the term covering everyone. We also refer to the term professionals for Marketing and Finance. "
My question was
Why do we refer to our fellows colleaugues who are in the HR Profession as "HR Professionals"? I mean, why the term "Professionals"?
Why do we always have to reiterate the term " Professionals"?
Do we call other functions also the same?
Marketing guy" Marketing Professional"
CA, Finance as " CA Professional or Accounts Professional"
Engineers as "Engineer Professional"
Or, are we scared that if we do not use the term "Professional" we will be sidelined and looked down upon

We need to view "Professional" as opposed
to "Personal/Unqualified/Untrained in the profession/amateur".
One who is competent/qualified/trained to handle the profession.Thus professional.
To draw from an analogy:-
A professionally run company is one which is not run on the whims and fancies of the promoters/owners-but by qualified/trained/competent personnel.
Professional who are paid remuneration to handle the expertise required of the them.
One who receives remuneration for his competent/qualified service.
To draw from another analogy:
A professional boxer when he/she fights for prize money( as opposed to an olympic gold) .
Thus in my opinion a "Professional" is one who is competent/qualified and trained to handle the job with objectivity-uncoloured by extraneous factors and receives remeuneration for the same.
The subject could ofcourse be developed furhter.

FIRST OF ALL I WOULD LIKE TO TELL U WHAT IS PROFESSIONALISM.
PROFESSIONALISM IS THE BEHAVIOUR THAT THE PROFESSIONAL IS ASSUMED OR EXPECTED TO BEHAVE AT HIS PROFESSION.
THEREFORE, THE PROFESSIONAL IS ONE WHO IS WELL KNOWN & WELL AWARE ABOUT WHAT IS EXPECTED & ASSUMED TO BEHAVE AT HIS PROFESSION.

Vrishi : Sir, i dont know to whom i m writing, u may b far senior than me but as u have told me to englite the comment i would like to add that -
every profession has certain demands & limitations in respect of the behaviour of the professional in dat particular profession which may b expressed or implied by the behavior of other professional in dat same field or profession.
for e.g; HR professional is assumed to be very discipline in his attitude, language & overall appearance.
But a Criminal lawyer need not to be so at all the time as he has to deal with different type of people in society.
Therefore, a person who know about this very well is said to be TRUE PROFESSIONAL.
I hope I tried better, if u have better idea than this of what mean BEING PROFESSIONAL, please tell all of us

I may be senior to you but that does not mean that I know about HR more than you
About professional I want to know what is the behaviour to be expected
Why is it different for different professions as pointed by you

I think u have red but not carefully. Please read carefully I think I have explained with best of my knowledge, still I add in one sentence in summary about the difference the reason of this is the "DEMAND & LIMITATION & OBLIGATIONS IN RESPECT OF BEHAVIOURAL ASPECT OF RESPECTIVE PROFESSION WHICH MAY BE EXPRESSED & IMPLIED."

We are talking here about the traits and not the inner motives
Competence and Competency are two different things
Competence-skill any one can possess
but it is competency-behaviour which really sets persons apart
Disciplined, overall experience, language-I believe each and every profession you have to exhibit these to do good
I want to know from you what are the competencies to be exhibited from an HR Professional?
