How Do You Create an Effective Training Process for Fresh Graduates in IT?

I am working as an HR Executive in a small IT company. I need the help of seniors in sharing knowledge related to the training process. Recently, we recruited freshers who came directly from colleges without learning any courses. For those candidates, I need to prepare a training process structure and evaluation process. Please guide me in this regard.

Ans: Well, the training program would initially focus on skill-based training (e.g., Java, .Net, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.). We also plan to include training on soft skills like communication skills, time management, etc.

2. What are the core components that they need to learn?

Ans: If the individual is undergoing training in technologies like .NET or Java, they should not only learn the specific technology but also aspects such as coding standards, writing optimized programs, email communication, and reporting style during the project development.

3. What is the objective of the training (define purpose, and what do you want them to achieve after the training program)?

Ans: The primary objective of the training is to enhance the skills of the freshers so that they can become billable resources in the shortest possible time.

4. What is the expected skill level vis-a-vis the topic to be trained?

Ans: If I were to rate on a scale of 1-10, the individual should be around a 5-6 in terms of skill level after the training.

5. Will there be an OJT (On Job Training) post the main training?

Ans: Yes, there will be on-the-job training to familiarize the individual with industry standards and real-time environments for a short duration.

Okay, I got it.

So with this, you can go ahead with this kind of strategy in my opinion:

1. Plan out a training program in layman's terms and introduce them to the concept of the job and the skills that are required.

2. Design lessons content-wise which progress in the following way:

Beginners --> Basics --> Intermediate --> Advanced --> Expert

3. You can also go about designing bite-sized lessons (these are lessons in which you give a little dose of lessons to your trainees ensuring they are not overwhelmed with lessons and activities).

4. You could also design self-learning modules where you feel instruction would not be required or are at a very self-explanatory level. At the end of each such self-learning module, there should be an evaluation to assess the desired learning skills.

5. Evaluation can take place in various ways, for example:

- Written tests
- Demonstration
- Training other peers
- Involvement in active projects (giving them small modules)
