Transitioning from Software Development to HR: Can I Secure a Job Now or Need More Training?

Hi all,

I am new to this forum. I need some advice from all of you. Actually, I am a software professional with over 3 years of experience as a software developer. I am very interested in administration, so I pursued my MBA with a concentration in personnel management through distance education. For my final year project, I focused on training and development within my previous company. Currently, I am working as an HR trainee at eSoft, albeit in an internship capacity.

I aspire to transition my career to Human Resource Management (HRM). Is it feasible for me to secure a job in HR now, or would I need to pursue further courses? Please provide me with your guidance and suggestions.

You have a good career prospect in HR. Having a good background in software and now shifting to HR will give you a good career growth in HR in the IT/Software industry. All the best.

You can do SAP-HR, but make sure that you do certification on it. Why? Because a number of people in the market are ready to train you on SAP HR, but no one will assure you the placement.

Hi,

I need suggestions on shaping my career in HR. Initially, I started as a recruiter in an IT consultancy and worked there for 1 year. Then, I switched to a pharma company where the company MD, at the time of the final interview, told me that initially, I was required to do administration work. Later, they would give me more HR responsibilities and, in the meanwhile, they would give me the designation of Management Trainee. However, even after six months, I am far from HR responsibilities. Whatever administration job I am doing, it's not a proper admin job either. Now, I am unable to decide what to do next... to resign and search. But then, it's been six months since I have not done any HR work, and I am feeling scared that I would not get a good opportunity now. Moreover, will it be a wise decision to leave the job during this recession time?

Please help. Please suggest. :(

Hi Suchitra,

No, don't leave your job. Try to discuss with your MD and get into some part of HR. Six months is nothing; don't panic. Even HR professionals at times do admin and other odd jobs. Don't give up. Try meeting your MD and explain your views; I'm sure you'll get through this.

They also promised to give me the designation of Management Trainee. However, after six months, I am still far from HR responsibilities, and the administration work I am doing is not the proper admin job either. Now, I am unable to decide what to do next - whether to resign and search for a new opportunity. I am worried as I haven't done any HR work in the past six months and fear I might miss out on good opportunities. Moreover, I am unsure if it would be wise to leave the job during this recession time.
