How Can We Make a Fashion Show Game More Exciting for Our Fun Friday?

I am planning to organize a Team Game of a fashion show contest in the monthly Fun Friday activities. I have the idea but want to know how it can be implemented. For example, this activity can be played in a group where the various teams can use newspapers to drape themselves and then decorate their attire using markers, paints, etc. I would like to know what other props or raw materials can be used to make this activity more exciting for employees.

There are 2 cases:

1. On the job floor across all teams/departments:
- Send out an attractive email announcing the show and plan 4-5 days prior.
- You can select or opt for a coordinator per team.
- Then ask each team to select raw material for their team (any available flowers, junk indicating recycle, cans, paper, stationary, vegetables, sacks, glasses, vessels, fiber, cotton, grass, etc. Even they can use their own cheap raw material).
- See which team uses the material to the fullest (dress, accessories, floor, theme, carried out well).
- Give away points or prizes to encourage.
- Snacks can also be arranged.
- Or all of the above can also be an on-the-spot event where limited time is given to the team to come up with the design or concept and then exhibit.

2. If it's held inside the campus as a big event:
- The above applies also except it should be given priorly. Build a ramp, with lights, stalls, music.

Do you seriously mean draping a newspaper, vegetables, flowers? Such types of fashion shows are organized abroad.

What if the newspaper, vegetables fall or tear? It will be like a wardrobe malfunction.

And what do you think can be achieved by this team working fashion show? Can you give an example of how such team events have helped your organization, or was it just a misuse of money?

It helps in team building.

We did this newspaper fashion contest (IT company - KGiSL, in 2007), during a quarterly JLT "Just Like That" event at Residency.

We also had activities like:

Ten people were formed as a group: we had four teams. Each of us was given a straw. We had to stand in a line, hold the straw in our mouth, and pass rubber bands from the starting point A (the first person in the team of ten) from a bowl full of rubber bands to the endpoint - the last person at the end of the line who had to drop it in the plate. The team that passed the maximum number of rubber bands wins.

We had to pick the rubber bands only using the straw in our mouth and pass them only using the straw to the other person's straw :)

Apart from the fun, it helped in improving team relationships and understanding that each team has a motive at work - achieving that does not matter who complained or fought, but how effectively we concentrate only on the task and keep moving.

The fashion show with the newspaper was a great show!! We had difficult people working together (once in a blue moon sight!!). This just says - if the task is fun, and you know there is a solution - there is nothing stopping you. It's the attitude.

I think you are yet to enter the industry and start working. You may/might/probably/or never know the importance of "Team building" activities!

Misuse of money: Everyone - Look at Ravi who is concerned about the cost of using old newspapers and a few other stuff...I appreciate him! At the time of cost-cutting, you need such people who think of such silly costs rather than looking at the big picture.

Excellent term "wardrobe malfunction".

At work, you are not asked to do the usual thing - you have to come up with something unusual - and no matter how many people are against you, you have to prove that it was simply the best thing to opt for.

If you are thinking about how to relate the task - the vegetables, and fruits added to that are just examples of how you deal with unusual circumstances. At the end of the day, you need to get your work done, and also prove and make others believe it's DONE!

And for your kind information: No one is going to drape themselves with ONLY newspaper. It's going to be on top of whatever they have worn...

Maybe you just did not have the option to at least involve in any team activities or do anything like this. There is a different saying - People start commenting on you and your work if they are not able to do something like what you are doing. If it's a great thing - you have critics. If it's a silly one - you have wise people who just keep silent and do not comment or question, and mind their work.

Hi Ravi,

Adding to Ash's points, I would like to mention another factor here - apart from teamwork, the team also gets to know:

- how to use the available resources effectively
- how to adapt to changes and situations
- what his/her fellow colleagues excel at and how to cope with each other

Leadership also plays a crucial role in these aspects. These are two very important factors for any candidate to survive in a competitive environment.

Ravi, all these games and events are not only held to ease employees' stress but also to help them realize the qualities mentioned above in a fun way. It's only when things are presented in such a manner that they truly register in our minds.

Therefore, it's about having fun with a learning experience. There you go! 😄
