Is a PGDBA-HR from SCDL Worth It for Job Recruitment in HR?

Please let me know if doing PGDBA-HR through SCDL (Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning) has any value at all. Will this be considered during recruitment as it is a correspondence course?

Wherever you are doing a distance course, it will not give you an edge as regular courses can. However, I would like to say that usually, people opt for distance courses when they are engaged in work to get promotions and add value.

There is nothing specific about SCDL or SMU; both provide distance education for an MBA. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Many people are doing the SCDL course. However, my personal opinion is that as it is just a PG diploma, it cannot be compared to an MBA. If one has experience, then it's ok, but as a fresher, starting up after doing a course from SCDL is tough. Doing masters from government universities like Annamalai or Madurai Kamraj, which offer 'Masters', is much better. Distance learning from SCDL is mostly pursued today just for the sake of the brand name Symbiosis. In the long run, I believe that doing masters from government universities is better, even through distance learning.

This is FYI that I completed my SCDL PGDBM course in 2007, and I got promoted in my current organization. Doing a course from a reputed university/institute always gives you an advantage in the future.

Please note, a regular MBA from reputable institutes has no comparison with distance learning courses. Moreover, a regular program will always hold an advantage over distance learning courses. If you have substantial experience, ranging from 4 to 10 years, then only consider opting for distance learning courses. Ideally, you should pursue a distance learning program from any institution as it holds equal value. With experience, it becomes more of a formality, and ultimately, knowledge is what matters. Therefore, whether it's a postgraduate degree or an MBA, both carry the same weightage from a distance learning perspective. I hope this provides you with insight on what to do next.

With the market being competitive, that is, when there are a lot of qualified people who have completed full-time MBAs from reputable management schools, the value of distance courses is very low. I have personally worked with individuals who have taken this course, and I do not believe it is worth the effort.

While it is true that what you know and how you apply it is what truly matters, the knowledge and exposure gained from these courses are limited unless one is willing to put in extraordinary efforts to learn the subject by extensively reading beyond the course material.

If you are interested in obtaining a good qualification, consider pursuing at least a part-time course. You may want to explore the PGCHRM program from XLRI, which offers classes throughout India via Reliance Web World or Hughes Direcway.

All formal university education is valid in India and abroad. You have to see how much knowledge this education elevates your capability because, after all, performance is the measurement. Even people from IIM/IIT kind of institutes are not capable of performing in the field because they are only theoretically good but practically a failure.

It does not depend on whether you are doing an MBA full-time or through distance learning; it all depends on how you are working in your organization - your attitude, dedication, IQ, and how much knowledge you can fit into your brain. You must have seen students from great convent schools not coming in merit despite having all the facilities, while a student from a municipality comes first. Why? Only because of dedication and the zeal to achieve something in life.
