Seeking Career Advice: Is an MBA in HRM Worth It for Advancing in HR Roles?

himanshuvshah
Respected All,

I have just completed the 'Executive Diploma in HRM' from Nirma University. I have approximately 10+ years of experience in a semi-HR role at the managerial level. I am now looking to further my studies in the field of HR.

Since I am currently employed full-time, could you please suggest whether I should pursue an MBA with HRM specialization from Sikkim Manipal, ICFAI, or IGNOU? Would this degree hold value, and would it enable me to secure a core HR position afterward?

I would also like guidance on whether Post Graduate Diplomas in HRM (Distance Learning) offered by Narsee Monjee or Symbiosis are considered equivalent to an MBA.

I kindly request senior professionals to provide me with advice regarding my future career prospects.

Regards,
Himanshu

Dear Himanshu,

It is beneficial for you to pursue an MBA (HRM) through Distance Education from SMU, ICFAI, or IGNOU for your career benefits. The Post Graduate Diploma in HRM may not be considered a PG Qualification, as it is only a Diploma. It is better if you do an MBA (HRM) from a university recognized by the Distance Education Council of India. Any Distance Education Programme offered by a university in India must have recognition from the Distance Education Council of India. This qualification will benefit you more in your career.

There is also an institute in Chennai, namely, the National Institute of Business Management (NIBM), which offers MBA distance Education. The institute also offers a one-year Executive MBA in different specializations, which you may want to consider. The website is www.nibm.com.

Hi Suri Babu,

Thanks a ton for your guidance. You are the one who responded and responded so well. I got a clear picture now. I will check all these options to do MBA in HRM and go ahead with the one which has recognition from the Distance Education Council of India.

ICFAI people told me that theirs is a UGC recognized university and their courses are also approved by UGC. Is it enough, or should recognition from the Distance Education Council of India still be considered?

Requesting you to spare some time and respond.

Thanking you once again for your very good and detailed reply.

Dear Himanshu,

You are very experienced, so I don't think I am eligible enough to guide you. But since I am also preparing for my MBA, I can give my personal suggestions. Since you are working full-time, you can go for ICFAI or IGNOU as they are good options. However, I don't have any idea about Sikkim Manipal University, so I don't want to comment on that. Also, a Diploma is not equivalent to an MBA as the first preference is always given to a full-time degree. But as you are working, you can opt for distance learning as well.

Hi,

The MBA offered by ICFAI is not recognized by AICTE, but the one offered by IGNOU is much more valuable than programs from other institutes. Think twice before you proceed.

Hi Antony,

Thank you very much for your reply. I had checked with ICFAI and others, and found that ICFAI has UGC approval. They mentioned that since they are a university themselves (Tripura University), they only need UGC approval for the Distance learning course. Following your advice, I will now also look into the IGNOU course.

Dear friend,

What Antony said is 100% correct. ICFAI is the worst university in India. Everywhere cheating...

Thank you.

Hi Himanshu,

I am working with a buying house and have about 2 years of work experience in HR. I am planning to do a distance learning MBA. However, I am considering Symbiosis as I have consulted with many people and learned that Symbiosis is also good for distance learning. It is recognized by DEC, India.

If you are interested, you can give it a thought for Symbiosis, Pune.

Hi Surabhi,

Many thanks for your suggestion. I got into this decision dilemma due to the difference in the degrees awarded. ICFAI and IGNOU provide an MBA degree, while Symbiosis, Narsee Monjee, and many others provide only PG Diplomas. So, I was worried whether both these degrees have the same value or are different. When I looked at Symbiosis and Narsee Monjee for PG Diplomas, I received the most advice to go for Narsee Monjee. So you may want to check that also for PG Diplomas.

Hi Md. Rafi,

I would certainly try to avoid ICFAI. But please give me options that you are suggesting. Do you think that the PG Diplomas awarded by Narsee Monjee, Symbiosis, or others are equivalent to the MBA degree provided by ICFAI, IGNOU, or Sikkim Manipal? Are these PG Diplomas and MBAs by distance education mode valued in the industry? Do people who possess these certificates get respectable jobs? If you can shed some light on your findings on the above, it will be useful.

Himanshu
