Struggling with Leave Policies in a Small Manufacturing Firm: How Many Days Should We Offer?

deenomony
Dear seniors,

I am working as an HR professional for a small manufacturing industry in Kolkata. It's a proprietorship company and doesn't have any structured policy. However, people working on-site are frequently taking leave, and every time there is a hue and cry in the office. I am insisting that management adhere to policies that should be communicated to my employees.

In your view, what should be the ideal leave policy for this kind of organization? How many leaves should be granted to my employees? Awaiting your suggestions.

Thank you.

Dear Friend,

In general, any organization is covered under the Factories Act, which mandates a minimum of 7 casual and 7 sick leave days for individuals not covered under the ESI scheme. Additionally, for every 20 actual working days, 1 earned leave needs to be provided unless specific rules apply under the West Bengal Government.

Every 1st January, the earned leave for the previous year must be calculated and credited to the employee's account. Casual leave (CL) and sick leave (SL) should be credited at the beginning of the year. Regarding utilization, restrictions can be implemented based on company policies and rules; for example, employees may become eligible for 1 CL and 1 SL every two months. Earned leave requires a minimum of 4 days and can be taken a maximum of 3 times in a year.

I hope this information is helpful.

Best regards
