Competency Mapping Process In A Project Based Company

am doing an hr project titled "Competency Mapping of employees"
in a project based company..
the company is into nuclear power generation, automotive and parts manufacturing...
pl tell me how to create a competency map as the company does not have one... and also
pl tell me the process of mapping the competencies of employees...

poornima..first u have 2 prepare job descriptions and job specifications of different posts u want 2 map in coordination with hr manager & respective departmental heads....they will tell u the proficiencies of various competencies actually required 4 the posts...thereafter u have 2 measure the proficiencies present in the employees holding those posts...if any gap is found then training is imparted....

Hi Poornima,
To begin with, you need to realise that Competency modeling and then mapping is a labour intensive time consuming process. If not dealt with the required seriousness, the entire program is doomed to fail. I do not in any way mean to discourage you.... just wanted you to realise that it entails a lot of hard work.
Out of the documents Govind has uploaded, there are few that are extremely good in helping you understand the process. However, make sure when you draw out the competencies for your organisation, you align it with the Vision and Strategy of the organisation. It might be tempting to use generic competencies but that will not work in the long run for you.

i kno that competency mapping is time consuming and that is the reason
y i want to understand how exactly the process is carried on and how effectively
it can be done within limited time... the document given by govind is really
very helpful... i have taken it seriously...

Hi Poornima,
I have attached PPT of Competency Mapping which will help you to understand about Competency Mapping Porcess.
As you said you want to do this project in Power sector. First you need to decide for which level you need to carry out the competency mapping. This is for workers or for Executives and managerial profiles, accordingly based on their job profile you need to define key competency required to perform the particular function efficiently.
Generally the competency can be of two type one is technical and other is soft skill competency. For each comptency you need to define the required proficiency to perform the partcular role effectively.

Dear Surendravarma,
The slides are very useful as it provides various theories necessary to shed light on what "mapping" is all about. You managed to show the link to Proficiency Level in the Competency Mapping Sheet. I would suggest, give examples on work behaviours for each proficiency level from 0 to 10. Let's say, Communication. What do you mean by Proficiency at Level 1, Level 2 and so on.

hi there im a summer trainee at mahindra right now and working on skill mapping for the workers there. eveyone here is talking about the competancy mapping about officers can anyone tell me where this skill mapping program is being run for the workers in the organisation? is there any other organisation where this type of program is being run specialy for the workers.
