I'm sure lots of the MBA fraternity students are perplexed with this question. Let's come out and dig this out.

Ideal Answer -> I love working with 'people'.

It's a good question. Why HR???

Have you (I mean the HR folks) ever thought why this kind of a question is probed only to us HR guys?

Why doesn't someone ask, for that matter in an interview, as to why you have chosen IT specialization? Why are you an accountant?

What I am trying to put across is, this question is probed just to see one's presence of mind. HR is basically to do with people interaction. So proving your people handling skills begins right from this point of answering this question!!!

If you can handle that person who's questioning you, you already have convinced him 90%.

Specifics to the point..."why HR"...

a) It's to do with one's flare for the subject.

b) One of the functionalities of any facilities or admin department in any company is about "Maintenance" of anything!!!

Likewise, resources (people) too need attention. HR is for resource maintenance (I don't mean maintenance in literal terms here).

Everything is automated; at least somewhere at some point, there has to be a human touch. That's where HR pitches in. It plays a major role as a "liaison" between your top guys and the resources.

I just thought I would share these points (particularly after reading through the conversations between you and Jeevan)...no offense...just kidding!!!...but believe me, I did laugh a lot!!! Sorry!!!

Let me know your thoughts!!!

HR is something that involves understanding people and their requirements. Therefore, individuals who enjoy analyzing these aspects may choose to pursue a career in this field.

Hey Dheeraj,

Try to understand. If you don't want to understand the role of HR, then you can accept all the general beliefs and go along with the crowd.

What I said is not complex. The meaning of it is - The role of HR is to ensure that the minds of the employees are free from worries and anxieties about their welfare, career concerns, social security, etc., so that they are available with their full focus on the work they are entrusted with in the departments they are deployed, in good mental and physical health and...

Hi Gurupriya, Jeeva, Archna, and others,

I couldn't access the net for some time. But I am really happy that all of you have come forward to contribute. I agree with most of your opinions. Special thanks to Gurupriya for presenting such a detailed analysis on the subject. Jeeva, I get what you intended to say (finally... poor me... I couldn't get it earlier on).

I am a 2nd-year student pursuing an MBA from a Pune-based B School and have chosen to specialize in HR. I have become more obsessed with the subject after a great learning experience during my summers at Gurgaon with an MNC. Would love to hear and learn more from all of you.

Regards,
Dheeraj

Reason for me choosing HR

Following:

1. Self-introspection...
2. By elimination, I asked myself which career I would not mind after 15 years. I didn't see myself going into finance and working with numbers for the rest of my life. I was planning to become a CA.
3. My mom - she is the most hospitable person I know. She will kill her guests - "ye khao, woh khao, ye piyo, ye woh." My friends have experienced this - "khila khila ke maarenge" - that's my mom's motto (kidding). She is simply amazing. She can talk to anyone and bring out the person from his or her shell in seconds.
4. I like solving grievances.
5. I love making friends, listening to their stories, sharing, and laughing.
6. I think I will become a good employee-relations manager, at least, that's what I want to become!

Comments expected!

Hi Dheeraj,

It's a self-introspection question we all HR personnel have to ask at one or the other point of time!

After completing my BBA CAM, I was wondering what to take as a specialization in my MBA. Finally, I landed on the planet of HR... pursuing MBA HR from Amity Business School, Noida. I chose HR because:
- I introspected myself and found the answer that I like working for people and with people!
- Like Sunanya, I did trial and error. I eliminated Computers and Finance as I couldn't see myself with numbers and machines for the rest of my life.
- Human Resources is that field of management which will never be exhaustive! In your words, the fire will always be there!

Aanchal
