Transitioning from Marketing to HR: Is It Feasible and How Can I Make It Happen?

loveswetha@rediffmail.com
Hi Friends,

Can anyone help me with some ideas for shifting from the marketing domain to HR? I'm an MBA graduate in HR and marketing with over 4 years of experience in marketing. Could you kindly provide suggestions on whether this transition is feasible at this point?

Thanks,
Anu

Shifting from Marketing to HR.

One approach is to use your core competence in marketing for HR services. The areas you can transition to with little effort include:

- Marketing of HR consulting services
- Recruitment/selection of marketing/sales people
- Training of marketing/sales personnel
- Training people in product management
- Conducting marketing appreciation courses for salespeople, etc.

It will be beneficial to take courses in train the trainer and sales training. Once you gain two years of experience, enrich yourself by learning more about job analyses, job description development, developing sales personnel competencies, etc., which will lead to HR specifics.

My suggestion is based on my very personal experience. I have a strong sales/marketing background.

Dear Anu,

Leo sir has explained very beautifully, I can say that you can shift your career from marketing to HR. But the thing is that Marketing people are working in frontline and have a more challenging job, while HR people are working backstage and they also have a more challenging job. If you wish to sit in one office for the whole day, motivate yourself to work at one desk, you can shift your career. Remember, the grass on the other side is always greener.
