Is Recruitment Really Part of HR or More Aligned with Marketing? What Do You Think?

Dear Members,

Is recruitment part of HR? My professor says it is part of marketing. Please give me your opinion.

Yes, recruitment is a part of Human Resources. You can term it as the marketing of candidates. However, recruitment always falls under Human Resources.

If you talk about a recruitment agency or placement consultant, their aim is to recruit the candidate at the client's place. It is one kind of sales. The consultant always charges a certain amount to the client for recruiting the right candidate. In this way, a consultant is involved in the marketing of candidates. The main job of the consultant is recruitment; hence, we can say it is one kind of marketing.

Hi,

It is like we do our marketing by showcasing our experience, the company we are employed with, and how much the company spends on us (in terms of salary) to other companies when seeking a change.

Recruitment is always a part of Human Resource Management. Recruitment plays a significant role in HR, where talent acquisition takes place.

Hi Kutkut,

Yes, but obviously, Recruitment is a part of HR. Human Resources means to hire or supply human power (manpower); the basic part of the HR profile comes from recruitment. If you look from any consultancy's side or from any esteemed organization's side, in a consultancy, a consultant has a different profile, and HR has a different profile.

In the above conversation, my friend Jack had explained from a Marketing & Sales point of view. That's also correct; we can say that by validating any candidate, we are doing our company's "Marketing," and by giving profit to our company by placing any candidate, it's a "Sale."

Thanks!!! If you need any further help, write to me on the same.

My Friend Kutkut,

Yes, but obviously, recruitment is a part of HR.

Human Resources means to hire or appoint human power (Manpower). The basic profile for an HR comes Recruitment. HR profile also includes Training, Appointing, Maintaining candidates' performance, verifying documents, etc.

The above-mentioned activities can be done after recruiting an employee.

As per the above conversations, my friend Jack has considered HR activities as a Sales & Marketing profile. That's correct. At the time of validating a candidate, an employee does Marketing and by recruiting manpower, giving sales in the form of profit.

HR of any Esteemed organization takes care of all the HR activities like Training, Salary formation, fulfilling basic needs regarding manpower, candidates' performance maintenance, etc. These activities can be performed after recruitment only.

So, yes, recruiting is the basic part of an HR profile.

Thanks!!!

If you need any further help, you can write back to me.

Hi,

This is Shyam. I am working in the recruitment department of a consulting company. The core of HR functions starts with recruitment. When there are no employees, there are no other issues to deal with! :)
tarun
Hi Rajni,

This is Tarun.

Somewhere down the line, recruitment is close to marketing because in marketing, we attract the consumer to consume the product, and in the same way, recruitment attracts a pool of applicants from which we need to select the best of the best.

Members can share their views on this.

Marketing plays a role in attracting customers, and HR is the main department responsible for this function.

Can anyone please tell me what the average charges should be for a consultant working with a client, especially if they are a budding consultant?
Deepamba
In my view, recruitment is part of both marketing and HR. Working on manpower planning, finalizing job descriptions for certain posts, deciding the competencies for any post, and then shortlisting resumes based on the job description fall under HR activities. Calling the candidates, convincing them of the existing post, bringing them in line with the company's set criteria and budget, come under sales. Marketing is all about selling our product, so here we are selling our vacancy to good candidates and, being a consultant, selling our candidates. I hope this has cleared up your concept.

Definitely, recruitment is part of HR because placing the right people in the right position is our duty.

Hi Everybody,

Recruitment has always been an integral part of Human Resource Management. Of course, there is some selling required from the HR personnel when he/she offers a candidate to join the organization. In an organization, the recruitment/staffing team performs a plethora of activities apart from usual staffing or recruitment.

However, in today's scenario, particularly in the IT sector, you need a Recruitment specialist who has a salesperson approach and who is more number-driven (thanks to the high labor turnover). Companies generally prefer candidates who are basically from consulting/headhunting firms and who have the right skills/aptitude for recruitment. Here, you can say that they are more or less like salespeople who have to achieve their targets within the specified timeframe.

Whereas in a traditional manufacturing setup, recruitment has always been and will always be a part of the HR department.

Thanks,
Prashant

Hi,

Recruitment is a part of HR and doesn't come under the service line for marketing. It's a unique way of getting the right people at the right time.
paromita26
Definitely, yes, recruitment is part of HR. It cannot be part of marketing.

Well, if you now say marketing... practically thinking, how consultants market their recruiting modules or how well they are able to market themselves on recruitment to different clients!!!
riyazmirasdar
Hi,

I agree with Priyanka Vinda. In my experience and my understanding of Human Resource Management, the first step in HRM is Strategic Planning or Manpower planning. The next step is recruitment. Therefore, I think recruitment is the core of HRM and most challenging compared to other areas of HRM.

Hi Rajni,

Recruitment is definitely a part of HR. Coming to the marketing aspect of your question, marketing is nothing but promoting, buying, and selling. This can again be divided into two:

1 - It's marketing because the recruiter has to speak a lot about the company so as to make the candidate join. The candidate should feel good about the company as he is going to work there. He should feel that he will have a good work environment, career growth, and so on.

2 - It's marketing because the tools the recruiter uses like ads, campus recruitment, job fairs, etc., act as a promoting tool for the company, i.e., it helps in marketing the company, brand building, etc.

Hope this helps you. All the best!

No doubt, dude. Recruitment is a major function of HR (as we can say, hiring and retaining).

Cheers

Recruitment is a major part of HR, and indirectly, it leads to branding and promoting the company. Therefore, recruitment is a part of marketing.

Dear Member,

It is the most important function to select the right person for the right work. You have to provide brief details to the candidate regarding the position they are applying for and present a positive image of the company (Brand Selling/ Company Selling) to the candidate. This is why it is referred to as Marketing. You need to utilize different strategies to attract the right candidate. Both Marketing and HR skills are essential to make a good recruiter. Marketing skills are needed to persuade the candidate, while HR skills are necessary to understand the candidate's human needs and guide them in the right direction.

Recruitment is the core function of HR. After all, HR is all about hiring new talent, retaining, and managing employees.

Hi to all :),

Recruitment is the process of adding a prospective employee to the company HR base. It is done through several methods and policies depending upon the company. Marketing is related to the description about the products & services; advertising; sales & distribution, etc.

Relationship between HR and Marketing with Recruitment:

HR: Ensuring the right person is at the right place (recruitment).

MARKETING: Providing a description about the products & services. Here, the description is to inform the candidates about the company's operations, mission, vision statements, goals & targets, and other data which is confidential. It is a part of the marketing of the company's policies for recruited candidates who assess their capability and suitability. This is my opinion.

Please post comments.

Dear Kutkut,

Let's look at the issue in the undermentioned manner.

Issue - Is recruitment an HR or Marketing function?

Job of Marketing - to market the product.

In this case, the product is the company which is being marketed to the prospective employees. But who is doing this marketing? The HR Department. Who is sourcing the employees? Again the HR Department. Who completes all the formalities of recruitment? You guessed it right, the HR Department.

So, it's obvious that recruitment is an HR function. The point to note is that the HR Department has to market its company to get good employees. Thus, a good catchy advertisement, internal references who can speak up for the company, and so on to get the best talent in the market. A solid employee may ask "May I know two good reasons as to why I should choose your company over XYZ?" This is a question raised by candidates confident of themselves and with multiple offers at hand. This is also where HR comes into being able to project their company as the best.

Hope this helps.

Hi!

Greetings for the day.

Recruitment is a core part of HR because it deals with a pool of manpower where you have to choose the best for your organization, and that is called human resources.

Thanks & Regards,
Shweta

Dear,

Basically, recruitment is a part of HR, but sometimes it is handled by an HR person and a Marketing person. In some small companies, it is managed by the admin and personnel department.

The HR process starts with manpower planning, followed by recruitment, selection, appointment, performance evaluation, and concludes with exit formalities.

Definitely, recruitment is a very important part of HR. It plays a crucial role in HR activities.
pooja.mehlawat
Yes, recruitment is part of HR. You may say marketing is involved in it as in the sense you need to market your organization to the candidate so that he/she may also be convinced to join the organization.

In many cases, it happens that candidates turn up for an interview, collect the offer letter, and then do not show up for joining. What lacks here is proper marketing of the organization to the candidate. However, this may be one of the reasons.
anu_madhu23
Hi friend,

As per the above comments, recruitment is a major part of HR. Wherever we work in HR, recruitment experience is essential to compete with people.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Please don't study under that professor unless he is joking about this. He wants to act smart, and you won't even get half the knowledge being on your own.

Yes, recruitment is a part of HR. If the recruitment is done by the organization itself, then HR takes up the full responsibility for all the activities of the entire process. Nowadays, recruitment is outsourced in some companies or done through consultancy firms. Even if the organization has outsourced the activity of recruitment, the process of monitoring that the outsourced party does its job is the responsibility of HR. "On your mark, get set, get the best at the cheapest" should be your motto.

I opine, yes, what your professor says is correct. The HR strategy is to attract talent to meet the job requirements. In the process, we market our company's profile, its business, growth in terms of business and individual growth, succession planning, facilities, etc., to a consultant/placement agency, etc. In the recruitment ads, we also market the brand image of the company.

By marketing, we will attract the best talent, where the HR skills are to be used. Upon receipt of applications/resumes from prospective candidates, the remaining process is called the recruitment process. I conclude recruitment is a core activity of HR, whereas marketing of HR strategy pertaining to talent acquisition is part of recruitment, which is not a core activity.
