Marriage Leave Dilemma: How Many Days Should Be Paid for a Month-Long Break?

saravanan1685
Hi,

I am working as an HR professional in a private firm based in Chennai. One of our senior employees has applied for a one-month marriage leave. We are ready to approve it, but how many of those days have to be paid?

Dear Saravanan,

Do you have any such provision in your Leave Policy or Leave Rules of your company? Generally, employees should apply for leave by stating the cause out of their Leave Available, unless specifically provided in your Manual or Leave Policy.

Dear Experts/Seniors, please suggest on my point.

No law can disqualify an employee from being married just because you did not mention leave provision in your HR policy. It's your common sense that prevails. Let wisdom prevail.

It would be paid leave, to the extent of leave credit of the employee. Generally, marriage leave is not specifically mentioned as a category in company leave policies.

Anyway, the employee has to be away on leave - with or without pay - to enjoy the event!

As per the laws, there are no special rules for marriage leaves. Employees can avail of their Privilege Leaves for this purpose and can use the full extent of their earned PL credits.

Dear One,

Would you please provide me with information on the maternity leave benefits (STATUTORY) available to regular and probationary female employees?

Hi everyone, I agree with Mr. Ravi's comments. Generally, marriage leave is not specifically mentioned in the company leave policy. Should it be a part of the company leave policy? If yes, then for how many days? Please give your valuable comments.

Dear all,

There are no specifications for marriage leave. For employee consideration, you can approve that; it might come under CL according to the availability. However, one month is very high. In our city, people are marrying in the morning and coming to the office for work in the evening. How is that?

So, please reconsider his one-month leave, and it might not create a bad impression among other employees or be taken for granted.

What is your question?

Once leave is granted to be adjusted as per the convenience of the company leave account... 😄 This cannot be a question. It looks like an invention or eureka discovery of HR. 💡

Best regards.

Dear,

You have granted him marriage leave, and as per your company's leave policy, if he has balanced leave credit in his account, then pay him for that period; otherwise, show leave without pay.

Thank you.

You can give 7 days of paid leave. The remaining leaves can be adjusted from CL or EL. However, to implement this policy, please consult with the higher-level management of your company.

Hi,

Marriage leave basically depends on company leave policies. For example, in our organization, we provide 7 paid leaves under marriage leave.

Hi,

You can allow him to take leave as per his request, where the leave would be calculated based on the casual/privilege leave balance available in his account. If the leave days he has applied for exceed the leave balance in his account for the current year, then you can consider those extra days as unpaid leave.

Hi,

I would suggest adjusting the leave balance by asking the employee to take leave based on their balance/availability of casual and sick leave. If the employee does not have any leave balance, it would be considered as "LOP" (Loss of Pay).

This is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. To make your employee really happy, an internal arrangement can be made using vacation leave already earned to offset the month given, and new leave can be earned upon their return to work. He or she may even be willing to work longer periods to repay the leave period.

Dear Friend,

As per my knowledge, there is no separate policy for marriage leave. You have to check the employee leave credit, based on that you have to calculate. For example, 'A' has 10 leaves in his account. He applied for a leave of 30 days. The total loss of paid days for that month will be 20 days, and the paid days will be 10 days. Note: you have to follow your company policies, based on that you have to calculate.

With regards,

Dear,

There is no provision of marriage leave in any policy of the company, I think. But you can avail the leaves as per your leave quota; otherwise, it is leave without pay. Don't worry, just enjoy the marriage.

If the company is new and setting all policies, what should be the minimum/maximum days to grant for marriage leave? Please advise.
muralikrishnan
Depending on the company's leave policy, fifteen days of leave for marriage can be sanctioned to an employee named Murali.
