Freelance Recruiter in Bangalore: How Do I Find the Right Service Tax Code for Invoicing?

TalentLead
Hello Everybody,

I am a freelance recruiter yet to register with the service tax department. In the meanwhile, I've made a placement and sent the invoice to my client without any service tax charges. However, my client is requesting me for a service tax code so that he can pay service tax to the government. Can you please tell me about the service tax code for recruitment and how do I find out what the code is? I'm located in Bangalore, India.

Thank you,

You have to register in the Service Tax Department. While you are applying for service tax registration, you need to submit the required documents along with the ST No 1 and a Xerox copy of your PAN Card. Your service tax number will be allotted based on your PAN Card number.

For instance, if your PAN Card number is ADCMF 8150 M, then your service tax number will be ADCMF 8150 M 001.

What Biksham said is correct, and you can proceed in the same manner. However, don't fool the employer with a wrong service tax regn no. as it is a statutory requirement, and getting the service tax regn. will take at least 8-10 days. The company may be asking for ST no. because they would have wanted to deduct the TDS as service tax has to be paid to the govt. by the provider (in this case, you) and the service recipient only reimburses it. However, there is a provision. You can tell the company that your receivable has not crossed Rs. 7 lakhs and hence you are not accounting for service tax. You can tell the company to deduct TDS if they want to, and in this manner, you can even realize your invoice amount. Regards
