Anu_Hr
Dear Members,

Another year is nearing its end, and once again, the HR department might require the Public Holiday List for the coming year. For your reference, the Public Holiday List for the following regions has been attached:

1. Maharashtra
2. West Bengal
3. Bangalore
4. Hyderabad
5. Delhi

Hi Anu,

Just one question!! I am from a recruitment background and now intend to move to a generalist profile. I wanted to know the minimum number of public or bank holidays a company should give to employees. Are there any rules, or does it vary from company to company?

There are a few holidays like Independence Day, Republic Day, and May 1st that are compulsory to give.

Please advise. :(

Hi,

Thank you very much for the holiday list. I have one query, is it compulsory to declare all the holidays as per the list, or can we make some changes as per our organization?

Sunaina

You may check the Tamil Nadu Government official site at www.tn.gov.in for the list of holidays for 2009.

Dear Sunaina,

Apart from the compulsory national holidays and state-level holidays, you can include any holidays according to your organization's wish.

Dear Bhakti,

There are 3 compulsory national holidays: 15th Aug, 26th Jan, and 2nd Oct, as well as a state holiday in Maharashtra on 1st May. State holidays may vary.

Apart from these, you can have 10-12 holidays in a given year, depending on your organization. If I have missed any other holidays, please help out Bhakti.

Very important and useful information. I think at this time all HR professionals need to prepare a calendar holiday list for the coming year.

Friends, my HR says, "As per the policy and the National Holidays Act, we have to give 10 days of holidays in a calendar year. In this, we have to declare a holiday for 26th Jan, 1st May, 15th Aug, and 2nd Oct. It's compulsory."

Now, under the Karnataka State N & F H Act, this is true. But to my knowledge, the same is not binding on the Delhi branch that I am heading. My HR is based out of the HO in Bangalore, and we have a policy of Holiday Lists being customized to each of our local branch sectors.

Request someone to please shed more light on this.

Guys, I head the Delhi branch of a Bangalore-based KPO. While finalizing the Delhi holiday list, I had suggested not to keep May 1 as a listed holiday. However, my HR says, "As per the policy and the National Holidays Act, we have to give 10 days of holidays in a calendar year. In this, we have to declare a holiday for 26th Jan, 1st May, 15th Aug, and 2nd Oct. It's compulsory."

Now, to my knowledge, this is valid under the Karnataka State N&FH Act but is not binding on the Delhi office. We do have a policy of customized Festival Holiday listing in our master policy. Can someone please advise me regarding the legal position in Delhi? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.
