Torn Between Job Change and Personal Commitments: How Would You Navigate This Dilemma?

Dear All,

Hi! This is Gojiri, I'm in a big trouble. On one hand, I'm looking for a job change, and on the other side, I'm thinking of my exams and my brother's wedding for which I need to take leaves in the month of Jan or Feb.

That's why I'm not able to decide whether to look for a new job or if I'll get selected. It would not be good to take leave for exams or for a wedding within a month of joining a new company. I'm totally confused with this.

Please, seniors, suggest to me what one should do in such a situation. Not only this, but I'm aware of market situations now that also scare me. If I leave this company, will there be no risk of being laid off by the new company if the situation worsens?

In this dilemma, I'm not able to concentrate on studying and also not going for interviews as I lack confidence in facing any questions related to this.

One more thing I would like to mention is that on the 30th Nov '08, only our management closed down the whole Customer Service Department and informed the 6 people not to come to the office from that day itself. On this 10th of December, they have been paid their dues.

Now you can understand whether it is good to be here or not as I have been working for only the last 1 year, whereas these Customer Service Department people were working for the last 4-5 years, even though management removed them within a few hours.

My strong reason behind not leaving this company is that I have already, because of my boss's problems, left two companies, one in a recruitment firm and another company's director every day scared me by saying that if you don't do this work properly, you'll be fired. One fine day, I got this company's offer, and I left that job.

Please seniors, if you were in my shoes, what would you have done? Please guide me as I'm not attending interviews for renowned companies also because of this confusion.

Please, I need your support, guys. Help me, and I'll be grateful for that.

First, prepare for the exam. Then, after the exam is over, prepare yourself for the marriage of your brother. Finally, focus on finding another job because you already have one.

If you need to take leave, remember that no employee is indispensable in the world. Your company can manage without you, so don't worry. You can apply for leave for the exam, the marriage, and then look for another job if needed.

I agree with Balu. Be cool nowadays. First, finish your exam and wedding in a relaxed mind that you have the job in your hand. After that, you can try for a new one.

Take your exams and then attend the wedding. But make sure that you are serious about your current job.

As per the situation concerned, it is critical, but "where there is a will, there is a way," isn't it? You might be aware of the leave policy of your company; based on that, you can proceed. At the same time, first of all, you had better consult your immediate superior as he may be the right person in this regard. One more important thing is that you must consider the present situation of the market.

In your place, I would give top priority to your brother's wedding. Your exams and jobs will always be there. If your brother's wedding is scheduled for a particular date, it will happen whether you are there or not! In your place, I would choose to be with your brother :-).

Regarding exams and jobs, if you know your true strengths, you will always come out with flying colors in any exam and job. Even in this day when they are firing people at will, you will have yours.

So, your choice is fairly clear, is it not?

Don't quit your job as of now. After your brother's wedding and your exams, you can think about leaving your current job depending on the situation at that time. Since you have completed a year with your current organization, I guess your seniors should not have many issues in approving your leaves.

I've read your replies, but don't you think that I'm losing good opportunities while thinking of my brother's wedding and my exams?

One more thing, there is no problem in getting leaves for both the exam and the wedding. My question is, I'm getting interview calls from MNCs as well as other good companies, as I was expecting to leave this organization only for an MNC or a very good company.

So now, if I'm getting the chance to catch that most awaited dream which is about to be accomplished, then why not take a chance?

I'm worried about the new company's rules and regulations; i.e., will the new organization allow me to take leave for the above things, or do I have to clarify these things at the time of accepting their offer? :unsure:

Is there any way of getting a better salary than the current one, as I know people typically receive 15% - 20% more based on their current earnings? If I want to get a better amount of money in hand than what I am actually getting, is it right to provide fake information about the last drawn pay? Actually, I've never done such things, but many of my colleagues who left our organization and joined the new organization were dishonest about their current payments, and as a result, they are getting almost double of what they were earning here.

I know this is wrong, and if someone is caught, their whole career could be ruined. But then, what should one do when, despite having good qualifications and experience, they are not getting what they desire?

It wasn't that I didn't like your comments or so, but I just wanted to highlight that some others might have had or will have similar problems. That's it. I do appreciate what you said, which is right; I'm not against it. As you know, all five fingers are not exactly the same; likewise, some people may feel differently. So, please try not to say things that will hurt anyone. Instead, post some good queries or problems that many others may have faced or will help them if they encounter such situations in the future. I request all members not to take anything personally as we are here to share and try to solve problems, not to create them.
