Considering a Part-time MBA in HR Without Quitting Your Job? Need Advice on Entrance Exams and Institutes in Mumbai?

I am Riya. I want to pursue an MBA in HR part-time because I don't want to leave my job as it provides me with lots of on-the-job experience and training in the HR field. However, I have the following queries:

1) I want to do MBA from a university where there is a compulsory entrance exam as I heard that universities which give degrees without entrance exams are not worth it. What is the fact? Please guide me.
2) What would be the fees for that course and its duration?
3) Can you suggest any such institutes in Mumbai?

I would appreciate it if you could kindly forward me the names of the institutes.

Hi Priya,

NMIMS offers a part-time MBA program. You can consider ICFAI for its correspondence course or Symbiosis as suggested by Akhilesh. The complete course at ICFAI will cost you around a lakh, but I have no idea about the fees at Symbiosis and NMIMS. You can always check their websites for more information.

When choosing an institute, ensure it meets your requirements, whether it has an entrance exam or not.

If you want to pursue an MBA in HR, you can do so from a well-recognized and globally known university, IGNOU. To achieve this, you would need to take the entrance exam, OPENMAT, which is typically conducted in the month of February 2009. The total cost of the MBA program at IGNOU would be approximately 17,000/- (800/- per course), with a curriculum comprising around 21 courses.

The duration of the MBA in HR program at IGNOU is 2 years, resulting in a Diploma in HR (PGDHRM). However, if you choose to undertake the optional project provided by IGNOU, the program's duration would extend to 2.5 years, and it would be recognized as a degree program in HR (MBA).

Hi Riya,

If you are really very particular about the university and their standards, then apply for CAT and try to get into premier institutes like IIMs. I personally feel that if you really have a strong experience, then the university doesn't really matter much. Other universities like Symbiosis are really worth considering. GOOD LUCK!

What I am thinking is that if I take experience of about 2-3 years (right now I have 1.3 years in the IT field), is it okay if I pursue my MBA? So that at that time, I would have ample practical experience at least to correlate with my syllabus in MBA. What are your views?

Firstly, I would request that it's better not to pursue any correspondence courses. But if you still want to go for it, then do it either from MDI or HughesNet Global Education. It's a refined course that gives you ample exposure.

According to my view, do it now since the beginning of your work, so you may not be overloaded with work, and that's the right time to complete your MBA. After 3 to 4 years, as you grow in the field, your responsibilities will increase. At that time, the concentration level in studies will decrease due to the stress of work. So, it's better to start early and finish early; you will gain experience alongside.

Taking a break will always hinder your practical knowledge on the subject. When you return after completing your MBA, you may feel everything to be new and, at times, confusing. So, if you can manage both, the wise decision is to pursue it through correspondence while working.

Try for Welingkar. There, you need to give your entrance GD & PI. It has a good brand name for part-time MBA.

Dear Riya,

In Mumbai, good institutes offer part-time degree courses recognized by the University of Mumbai. However, please check if the entrance tests are over. The colleges to consider are:

1. JBIMS
2. NMIMS
3. Welingkar
4. Somaiya

These four colleges are considered good in Mumbai, although there are many others. The fees need to be checked, but they are as per university norms. I work as a visiting faculty at a few of them.
