What Topics Are Covered Under Employee Relations? Seeking Your Guidance

Dear All,

Could you please guide me on the topics that fall under Employee Relations?

There is no specific ruling in this regard. Any arrangement required to be done in an establishment, which will increase the morale of employees and is necessary to maintain a good employee-employer relationship, will come under the study of employee relations. As such, compensation, hours of work, weekly holidays, festival holidays, leave, workers' participation in management, bonus, incentives, grievance handling, disciplinary action, strike and lockout, dispute settlement, job security, promotions, and matters connected therewith, recreation, housing, and education, etc., shall come under employee relations.

Once the basic apprehension about the continuance of employment or job security is removed, much tension could be avoided. It is easy to handle employees of organizations that care for their employees. If the employer thinks that employees are resources to be utilized over a long period of time, the system will improve. Unfortunately, many employers fail to align with a long-term perception but remain confined to their short-term goals, even with the expansion of HR!

Hi Arpana,

Employee Relations, also called Industrial Relations, basically deals with Employers' prerogatives versus Employees' rights at the workplace. It covers the entire gamut of Union relations, wage negotiations, disciplinary action, and compliance with various labor statutes, etc.

Jai
