Navigating the Job Market: How Can HR Freshers Thrive Amid Recession and Uncertainty?

This is Rajesh G. I am pursuing my II-MBA in H.R at Anna University. I would like to know the impact of the financial recession and recent terror attacks. As pink slips are given to employees in most companies, we can see downsizing being done everywhere.

1. To what extent will the demand for H.R freshers be affected?
2. At this critical point in time, apart from the curriculum, what are the important concepts that freshers should learn?
3. What exactly are companies expecting from freshers at this point in time?
4. How can we mold ourselves when we are stuck in the middle of the road?

Kindly guide freshers like me as we are in need of your help at this critical stage.

Same is the case with other HR freshers too. Seems we have stuck midway. The future is very dark. Would it be fruitful to work in consultancies from a career point of view.

I can understand your concern. The slowdown in the job market will definitely diminish in the coming months. Meanwhile, you could pick up a few practical skills that will aid you in your prospective HR job. As a stop-gap arrangement, why don't you learn/pick up presentation skills, Excel macros, pick up a freelance recruiting job, or learn counseling skills? See if you can be part of a campus recruitment program, be a part of the Teach India initiative, etc.

Recession is the best time - there are a lot of opportunities for skilling and re-skilling. Start freelancing, don't wait. Look for internships. In fact, I see a lot of hiring in temp jobs. Refresh your skills and get those value-adds. Even if you don't have a job, look for ways to pick up practical skills. Learning never goes to waste.
