Planning to Move to the USA: What HR Job Profiles Should I Aim for with My Background?

I have a Masters of Commerce with a specialization in HRM and am currently pursuing an MBA in HR from Symbiosis, Pune through distance learning. I am currently working in a recruitment consultancy firm that specializes in headhunting.

I am planning to move to the USA in a couple of years. I would like to know what kind of job profile I should aim for to secure good job opportunities there, as well as understand the scope of HR in the USA.

I would appreciate your guidance on this matter at your earliest convenience.

Dear Reshma,

Anything you do and are good at will fetch you good jobs in the market. For the U.S., it is a vast country with each state having its own demand.

Two things:

1) You need to get a work permit to get employment in the US. This work permit will decide what jobs you are eligible to do.

2) Check if your experiences and qualifications qualify you to get a work permit as per your choice.

I presume you are going to the US after marriage. Usually, to travel with your spouse, the US allows a Dependent Visa, with which you are not eligible for any employment. To get employment, you need to apply separately.

Hi Reshma,

I would suggest you look for a US staffing company that operates from India. It's nothing but a very similar structure to consultancy firms that contact individuals in the US and place them there. See if you have any such company in your area. Try to get involved with it or consider headhunting someone from that company who could assist you better.

I am in New York in the USA and have a BS in Human Resources Management. I am an HR manager in a bilingual environment and do enjoy what I do.

My advice to you is that in order to be successful in the HR field here, you absolutely must keep up with your education as it is a requirement in the US. There is a high demand for professionals but it is competitive.

I have been attending as many seminars and affiliating myself with as many business groups as I could. I do a great deal of volunteer work which allows me to help others and gain experience as well.
