Considering a Shift from HR to Admin: Will It Affect My Future Career Path?

rajeevdixit
Hi friends,

I have been working in HR and admin for the last 6 years and am presently employed as an Assistant Manager - HR & admin in a limited company. I have been receiving offers for positions in administration, such as Assistant/Manager Administration (not HR). I am uncertain whether taking up an administration role would allow me to transition back to HR in the future if I so desire. What impact would this decision have on my career? What are the prospects in the field of administration? Your urgent response would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance.

Dear Rajiv,

HRM is one of the wings of the Administration. Administration comprises a wide range of activities, including Human Resources Management. If you venture into Administration, you need not worry; you will definitely have chances to return to HR. In some organizations/firms, the Administration wing takes up Human Resource activities. What you need to do is develop your skills in Administrative activities as well as Human Resource Management functions and focus your attention on HR policies while in Administration.

As far as myself is concerned, I am a retired Gazetted Officer of the Education Department and actively involved in Administrative matters besides HR activities of the Department. I used to develop my interest and enthusiasm toward HR activities in my Department, although I am actively involved in Administrative activities. To my knowledge, every HR Manager must be acquainted with Administrative policies and programs, and every Administrative Officer must be acquainted with HR Policies and Planning.
