Guidance for MBA HR Student on Job Search Strategies and Career Growth

I am currently in my 3rd semester of MBA specializing in HR. Can you please guide me? Our college does not provide placement facilities, so we have to look for jobs ourselves.

Accordingly, I wanted to register my name with a consultancy. However, they asked me about the kind of job profile I am interested in. Honestly, I don't have any idea what would be best for a fresher in HR, so I opted for an admin profile.

I understand that it's tough for a fresher to find a good job and may have to start in any consultancy. I am confused. Could you please advise me on which job profile I should opt for so that I can receive good calls from these consultancies and help in my career growth.

Your story appears to be a Bollywood film story because there is no logical connection in consultancy to offer you work experience, kind of exposure. Secondly, for free placement in the HR department to learn in any industry, just one introduction letter from your institute is enough.

Your final request does not match with the first intentions, which are not clear themselves. What are you aiming for at the 3rd-semester level? A job? Working exposure? Job profile in administration or HR? It's total confusion. You must express clearly what you are looking for: a job profile of administration or HR for preparing an application or your desired dream job?

Tell me, what do you people do who are in the 3rd semester where placement facility is present? I also ask those who are in the same situation as me in HR - with no placement facility.

It's very simple. Take a recommendation letter from your institute and request any organization to place you for training in HR & Admin for practical experience initially during the 3rd semester. Then, use this experience to apply for employment. I think you are clear this time as I have understood your problem.

- Attend a few interviews to gain valuable exposure.
- If you are unable to secure a position in a corporate environment, consider joining a consultancy and kick-start your career as a recruiter.
- Do not remain idle after completing your MBA; consider joining a consultancy immediately as your post-MBA days are crucial.

Hey, don't worry at all. You have to finish your final semester, right? Try to collect as much information as you can for the same. HR is one domain where only lucky people get a chance to enter directly into the corporate world and work with seniors. About 100% of HR friends have worked in some consultancy or the other. Why? Because it makes you familiar with all domains and helps enhance your communication skills.

Recruitment is one thing you have to learn from a consulting firm. Don't worry too much or panic; HR is the coolest job on earth, I believe. What do you say?
