Confused About Job Offer Details and Career Path: Should I Join or Pursue an MBA?

surjit khajuria
Hi, My name is Surjit. I am from Jammu. Two days back, I received an offer letter from Genpact for a role in the Voice process for Consumer Fulfillment (CF). The issue arose during the initial phase of my interview where the representative from Genpact offered me a salary of Rs. 9500 after deductions, indicating that the process would be Collections.

However, upon visiting Chandigarh to obtain my offer letter, the HR personnel informed me that my salary would actually be Rs. 9000 after deductions, and I would be assigned to the customer care department for inbound processes. This discrepancy has created a dilemma for me as my family is hesitant to support me due to the low salary offered, especially considering the location in Gurgaon.

I have several questions regarding this situation:
1. Should I proceed with joining this company given the conflicting information provided to me? How can I trust their word?
2. I feel misled as my interest was not in customer care, and this discrepancy only became apparent after receiving the offer letter. I am unsure whether to accept the position.
3. If I decide not to accept the job offer, am I allowed to decline it even after formally accepting the offer letter?
4. Will there be any repercussions if I choose to resign from the company? Could this decision result in being blacklisted?
5. My family is urging me to consider pursuing an MBA. Should I focus on finding a job to gain independence or should I prioritize preparing for an MBA before seeking employment?

Hi Surjit,

Make a decision that will not impact your career, and remember that you have the right to choose whether to join the company or not. By doing so, no company has the right to blacklist you.

Dear Surjit,

As you don't want to go for the customer care kind of a job, so where is the question of accepting the offer? You are not interested in the job profile they are offering you. In my opinion, you should not accept the offer, and no company has the right to blacklist you.

Regarding your decision to pursue your MBA, it totally depends on you and your interests. Don't do it just because your family is insisting. Look at all the possibilities open to you, think, and then make a decision.

And one more thing, keep smiling :)

If you are getting a chance to study, you must prefer it first. Jobs are plentiful for people with good skills and qualifications. If financial constraints are not permitting you to pursue further studies, then you may consider taking up a job. To my knowledge, Genpact is a well-reputed company. Even if you have been offered a lower amount than the fixed salary, you may still choose to join the company as it is one of the best BPO companies. If you feel you have been deceived, it is better to seek clarification from a higher official of the company regarding what you have been told and what is being offered to you. All the best.

Be clear about which profession you want to pursue further. Clearly define your goals and interests. If you have any doubts about Genpact, address them with the management. Base your decisions on careful consideration and consult with your parents to reach a mutual agreement.

You need to be aware of which field you want to pursue. If you are seeking a reputable company, then Genpact is a very good option. However, if you are not interested in customer care, forget everything and aim for an MBA as you mentioned.
