How essential is time management for us, read this technique to manage yourself. If you learn the art of managingself, you can succeed in anything.

Self-Management - The Best Bet!

Human resource experts have been working towards streamlining processes and reducing the administrative burden on HR professionals. It is in such an endeavour that self-management aided by technology comes as a welcome change.

Benefits

Possibility of well-informed decisions

Streamlines processes and reduces costs

Overcoming hurdles

Three issues that could prevent employees from embracing self-management are:

Anxiety- An HR professional might pass on his anxiety to other employees. This hinders the process of change.

Awareness- HR managers should focus on promoting functionality of self-management. Baseline researches like surveys and focus groups help employees uncover obstacles to self-management.

Access- Earlier employees hesitated using the tools since neither had they access to the Internet at work nor were they proficient using it. Now it is no more an issue as employees can always access the Internet even outside home.

Identifying obstacles is the first step in self-management. A step ahead is establishing strategies to make it happen:

Provide clear goals

Management should convey their expectations to employees clearly. They should specify the channels they would like them to use.

Practice what you preach

Aligning actions with self-management goals reiterates what is expected. More than informing, it is important to motivate them to ensure they are on the right track.

Move together

Employees’ ability to change their behaviour is possible when they consistently hear encouraging messages from all the levels of management.

Organisations should encourage self-management that uses technology that is easy to use. Employees get better opportunities to take up responsibility for their benefits. This tool helps employees help themselves better.

Dear Archna,

I agree with you that time management is vital for everybody - at all steps of the corporate ladder and for everyone else - students, housewives, etc. Time Management is the first step to self-advancement.

Being a corporate trainer and external faculty in management schools, I always insist that Time Management is not enough - it should be strongly linked to Stress Management. This is because both Time and Stress Mismanagement are closely and inseparably linked. You are stressed. You begin to mismanage time. The more time you mismanage, the more you are stressed. The more you are stressed, the less able you are at managing time. The cycle goes on unabated, and stress levels and difficulties in time management keep on rising.

The only way you can break out of this cycle is to learn how to manage time and manage stress equally well. Once you start reducing your stress levels, your time management skills start operating, and as you manage time more effectively, your stress levels keep decreasing, until you reach a stage when you can cope with both time and stress without much difficulty.

The combined Time and Stress Management programs I take have been received enthusiaistically by all the participants, and they say they have definistely been much more effective after following these precepts.

So, manage both time and stress to be really successful!

Hi Jeroo,
Thanks for adding your valuable inputs to this post.
You are correct both are interlinked, if you have stress that means you are not managing your time properly and as and when you are not managing your time, you are likely to have stress.
If you want to distress, manage your time. :)
Cheers

Valuable information on stress and time management. "Self management" is a very insightful term you have used. Spiritual books are full of "Know thyself " which can be very difficult in real life as the latest American research shows(some links on my blog- http://mypyp.wordpress.com/
Good self management can ensure the right person in the right job and harmonious work relationships- two of the most important HRD objectives in my view.

Most HR people / deptt do at best preach rather than practice .
Time management is essential is known to every employee.
Trumpeting wo'nt help.
Educate seniors and involve them in coaching.
Do remember to test the seniors grades in time management .
Efforts must be full blast to improve their time management capabilities and , of course , their active cooperation as a involved faculty - teaching while practicing .

Hey MG and Hiren,
I'm glad you like the inputs shared by both Jeroo Mam and me.
Time Management is an integral part of anybody's life not necessarily in professional life only but also in Personal life.
Managing time has become such an important thing to maintain a well acclaimed work life balance which most of us are not able to do. I hope you all will agree on this.
If we manage ourselves and our time we can easily manage others.
Cheers!!

Hi All CiteHR members !

At the outset THANKS to Ms. Archana for putting up such useful tips on Self Management & time management as well ! :)

Well i do agree that if we are able to manage ourself properly with respect to time & our activities, rest all other issues and controlling and managing others is automatically taken care of ... but the important pitfall is that practically we must first be an example for others to follow the same specially if any "Change Management" is concerned !

I wholeheartedly agree with all others that to manage our own self is the most difficult and challenging tasks for us... and once it is set right ... rest all matters is taken care of because of the enhanced effectiveness in whatever we do thereby having positive impact on all other external entities ! :)

That's a very useful contribution, keep it up Ms. Archana ! :)

Thanks Pankaj,
Hope we can share these inputs with our friends and colleagues to make a balance between work and home.
Generally, we all have a lot of excuse for not managing our time properly,
Traffic, rains etc are the best excuses we give.
