National anthem: Jana Gana Mana, writer: Rabindranath Tagore, from West Bengal, Nobel Prize winner.

National song: Vande Mataram, writer: Bankim Chandra.

Mike is the only person who's correct in this whole discussion because this information is fake. It is as fake as that 2-moon thing on 27th August circulating a little while ago.

First of all, UNESCO would not issue a contest for anthems because it is such a sensitive issue. Secondly, it's an organization meant for better things than selecting the best anthem. Thirdly, in today's world where everything (even a "name the 7 wonders of Delhi" contest) is such huge news on TV and radio channels, do you think such a contest could have remained concealed until the Indian National Anthem was chosen as the best? It's high time we verify a report before discussing it and feeling proud of the same!

I don't know the difference between the national anthem and a song. The author of the National Anthem is Rabindranath Tagore, taken from his book Gitanjali. The National Song is "Vande Mataram" by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. It is written in Sanskrit, which makes it very tough. I can sing the anthem without any help, but not the national song completely. There are many Indians who can't sing the anthem and don't respect it. I think the national anthem represents the history and culture of the nation, and everybody should pay respect to it. That's it.

I too received this email. For every citizen, his/her national anthem is the best in the world. Announcements like this make only emotional sense and nothing professional. I hope we can be professional and radical in our approach and devoid of such political demeanors.

I have also done some checking! No such authenticated reports are there. But it feels good to see the comments on how you feel about your country.
