Sharing My Disturbing Experience on Cite HR: How Can We Ensure Respectful Interactions?

Dear friends,

I want to share this with all of you because I don't want anybody to have this type of bad experience from Cite HR like I did.

Yesterday, I posted a message to many of the Cite HR members asking for help in finding a job in Bangalore. I was hoping that some of them would reply and inform me about job openings there. I had provided my Gmail ID for contact.

The next day, I received a chat request on my Gmail from one of the Cite HR members whom I had messaged. However, during the chat, instead of helping me, he sent me some vulgar sentences and then logged out. He mentioned that he is an HR Generalist in an automobile company in Chennai. I prefer not to mention his name here as I don't want to harm his reputation, but I hope that by reading this post, he will feel remorse and refrain from treating others this way.

I urge all members of Cite HR to assist others, and if they are unable to help, at least not to behave in such a manner. Let's not tarnish the reputation of Cite HR, which is a very helpful platform for HR professionals, and there are many good people willing to offer support.

I was thinking to write his name here, but at the same time, I thought it would give a bad impression of him among all of us and could also affect his career. So, I gave him a chance to realize what he has done and improve his behavior.

That person is really stupid. He is not a professional individual. Kindly, I am giving one piece of advice to all girls: please do not add unwanted persons to your personal email address. Ask for their contact number and speak with them. While speaking, do not call from your personal number. This way, you can assess them and determine if they genuinely have any job opportunities.

Yes, already there are very few jobs in HR, so don't believe anyone so easily. You can go to the chats section in Gmail and send the saved Gmail chat transcript to CHR so that he can do the needful. BUT YOU ALSO NEED TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO PROVIDE YOUR IDENTITY TO OTHERS. EVEN I, BEING A BOY, DON'T PROVIDE MY IDENTITY TO OTHERS. JUST KEEP YOUR CONVERSATIONS LIMITED TO SHARING INFORMATION AND THAT'S ALL. THE WORLD IS A VERY BAD PLACE.

This happened with me as well, not on the Gmail ID, but I started receiving some nonsense mail in my Cite HR inbox only, and I started avoiding this. But I am really sorry to hear this. Take care and do not give your IDs to anybody, not even your numbers.

I would also suggest that I personally feel whenever we are sending the CV to any unknown ID, please try to avoid writing your name, phone number (at least not your own number but your brother's or father's number). Only give your mail ID, and whatever the consultant or anybody feels like communicating could do the same over the mails. I think it's not being cowardly but being more precautionary so that the positive energy which we carry the whole day should not be wasted on nonsense and unwanted things.

It doesn't make sense to hide his name among all friends. By doing this, you can warn the many lady victims who are presently doing the same thing with other lady professionals. The so-called gentleman who is doing this is surely reading everything. He's smart enough to give his fake identity or background. If you have an official ID, then that's the best.

Did you even send your profile with all your details? As long as you are not filing an FIR with Cyber Cell, his career will not be ruined.

I really feel very bad for you, as I am from Chennai and also from HR. I always feel proud of a lady's security, even during wee hours.

Few of the black sheep in the lot are always present.

I would like to advise a few points to all the lady employees to take care of a few things always, especially those staying in hostels/PGs/different locations other than their hometown:

1. Never give the full address and contact details blindly to a group whose members are not even your acquaintances.

2. Mail your CVs only to corporate IDs like direct company/consultant/job postings.

3. Avoid blindly sending a profile even without the knowledge of a vacancy.

4. Just give a brief of your experience like (4-5 yrs. of exp. in HR with IT/ITES or BPOs and presently working as Asst. Mgr-Recruitments, etc.), then later you can send the CV.

5. People will start copying your skill sets or job descriptions/responsibilities to their CVs. Not everyone can write good resumes. So, they just visit the net cafe, try to read almost all the saved resumes in that system, and create their own with copy, paste, and editing. So, please delete your CVs or any other details like online statements, CC statements, etc., before logging off.

Last but not least, PLEASE REMOVE YOUR ID Card before leaving the office premises. I always see girls on bikes, local buses, and trains with their cards hanging, indirectly inviting troubles for themselves. Prevention is always better than cure.

It is most unfortunate. To avoid such occurrences, I suggest visiting Naukri, Monster, etc. I am sure the Cite HR Administrator would have access to the database of all its members. Such person(s) should be blacklisted.

I also appeal to all (those who are applying for any positions) to find out relevant information from friends, relatives, job-related sites rather than approaching or interacting with "invisible persons."

Even I had the same experience as you. That was when I wanted help regarding companies that can assist me in getting a project placement. He had provided his number, but when I called him, he spoke about something else. I felt so bad. However, there are people who genuinely help on citehr.

I too faced a bad experience, but not as bad as discussed above. There was an advertisement for an HR Generalist position in a Chennai-based company posted on Cite HR. I attached my resume to the post, and the very same evening, I received a call saying, "your profile has been shortlisted, and I will be taking a round of interview now for further approval."

He asked me several basic questions and at the end told me that I had cleared the first round. For the second round, I was required to come to Chennai for a final interview by the weekend. I canceled all the other interviews I had planned with other recruiters. However, when I called the company the next day to ask about the address (as the company seemed genuine based on their website but did not have any office address listed), they informed me that they needed more time.

Days went by, and despite my repeated calls, they kept asking for more time. Finally, after almost a month, they informed me that "YOU ARE A FRESHER, AND WE DON'T TAKE FRESHERS IN OUR ORGANIZATION."

The fact of whether I was a fresher or not was their first question in the interview. Moreover, nothing was mentioned in their post regarding the years of experience they desired from the candidate.

I urge all Cite HR members to post only genuine job listings in the employment section with utmost clarity and to avoid creating false hopes in the minds of job seekers unless they are clear about the company's recruitment policy.

It's really a bad thing. But this happened because of us, our mentality to forgive others whether it is right or wrong. Do you think that guy will not repeat the same thing to other girls/women again in the future? This is my personal view that if somebody makes a mistake, then he/she should be penalized for that.

It's okay that you did not mention his name here in this forum, but you should mention the name to the CiteHR administrator so that he/she is also aware of this kind of mishap.

Secondly, one of us wrote in this thread that CiteHR is only meant for HR professionals. How? Because I'm a finance guy working abroad (NRI) and staying in Delhi NCR. My next visit is in March 2009.

Very first, if we are professional and mature enough before starting chatting with someone unknown, one should think. Let him inform the actual job requirements, and if there really is a vacancy, he would call you officially. Why is chatting required at all?

As an HR professional, I would suggest that we do not take any serious action against that person. I believe that individual may not be aware of the reach and impact of citehr in the larger world. This is actually our strength, which cannot be jeopardized by one person making such ridiculous mistakes. We all understand that mistakes happen. In my opinion, making mistakes is not a crime, but repeating them is a serious offense in itself. My suggestion to the moderator (IT dept.) would be to have an undertaking or oath that all active and new members must agree to.

Never send in your contact details to any of the strangers on this website. Please don't assume that this site is only meant for HR professionals. Many others also enroll. Some three to four months back, there was a post from a female CiteHR member who had requested resumes for a position without providing details about the company, job description, salary, etc. To the dismay of many CiteHR members, they openly shared their mobile numbers, email addresses, resumes with photos, and other details.

I replied quickly to that member, pointing out the unprofessionalism of her post. Soon, there was a volley of scolding replies from senior members to my response, suggesting I shouldn't be harsh or confrontational in this forum. When I try to caution for a good cause, people sometimes misunderstand my intentions. It's alright. Your situation now serves as evidence of the comments I made long ago. Apart from being an HR professional, I am also a writer and journalist, familiar with various types of people and their motives.

I am always a whistleblower at the office, and I will continue to do so here.

Please be cautious.

In the wake of the recent incident with one of our CiteHR members (misuse of email id), I think it's best that all of us take a step back and introspect. First, you have to remember that "CiteHR" is a networking site, and there will be frequent exchange of details. It's hence at your discretion to share your contact details or not.

Having said that, the onus lies on all the other members in this forum to use the information that gets passed around in the best possible ethical manner. I strongly suggest that the CiteHR administrators do not entertain new registration requests from people who provide only half or incomplete information. All other users, please report any troublesome users or messages in this forum.

I suggest that the citehr.com team should appoint HR experts to scrutinize the emails daily. Alternatively, at least a rule should be implemented that requires citehr members to provide their real photos, professional details, and personal information.

If necessary, kindly provide a male contact (such as that of your parents or brothers) for communication purposes. Only if the HR person is trustworthy, should you consider sharing your personal contact details. Additionally, some individuals are posting their resumes directly on this platform, which could inadvertently benefit those with inappropriate behavior. Therefore, it is advised to avoid sharing resumes, especially for female candidates.

This platform is valuable, so let's preserve its integrity by refraining from such actions.
