British Words That Trip You Up: What Should Be on My Pronunciation List?

allypitman
Hi all,

I am planning to create an audio MP3 file of British words and phrases that are difficult to pronounce. I am currently looking for suggestions of any words or phrases that you think should be included on the list. I am particularly interested in those words/phrases used in a business or office context. I am a professional British voice-over artist, so I hope that by creating this audio recording with my native British accent, it will help trainers and students alike.

I look forward to receiving your suggestions!

All the best,
Alison

Hi,

Instead of providing recordings of each word, please provide an audio file containing the general rules for RP.

Thank you.

Hi Rajatrachar,

Many thanks for your suggestion. It is something I shall look into as unfortunately I don't know of, or if, there are any general rules of RP.

Thanks again,
Alison

Dear Alison,

May I suggest that you record pronunciations of words and phrases where the Received Pronunciation (RP) and the American pronunciation differ.

Regards,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your suggestion. The difficulty is that I am a British voiceover artist only, so I wouldn't be able to voice the American pronunciation side. I think I may hold off on my project as I'm having difficulty finding any written documents to help support the recordings. My conclusion is that an audio file on this subject is not actually needed by anyone, so it would be pointless to produce it.

As yet, I haven't received any feedback from all those who requested the British accent MP3 file, so it's difficult to gauge whether this or any future recordings would be of use. If I come across any Word documents or presentations that I think would benefit from being produced as an audio recording, I shall be sure to let you and the other forum members know.

Thanks again,
Alison
